Hi all,
I am very interested in taking up ventriloquism, but I do not know how to get started. Recently I saw the Maher course for ventriloquism (around 85 bucks), and would like to try it out. Any ideas or recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks, & have a nice day

I got the course second hand and have
been going back to it and other sources for the last 20 + years. You might check out through your library and get some basic books and videos probably available through your system or through Inter library loan. I have gotten books, tapes and videos on both magic and ventriloquism. Things from the Maher Studio, Bill Boley.. (Not THE Course but some of their booklets and even a few cassettes on voice development and ideas for use with animal puppets. Keep searching. IMHO Vent sets me aside from some entertainers. There are a lot more Magicians than puppeteers in my area. I have gotten great service from the nice folks in Littleton Colorado. I purchased an Axtell Chimp from them. They have been great on the phone, in packaging "Zelda" and in answering emails. Harris Deutsch Laughologist

If you can find a copy (used or in your library), I have always liked "Ventriloquism for Fun and Profit" by Paul Winchell. For my money, Paul Winchell was perhaps the most accomplished ventriloquist ever. BUT vent is a skill learned primarily by doing it.

I think I may be one of the few performing ventriloquists who never ordered the Maher course. Just never got around to it.
However, I've done a lot of business with Maher over the years and Clinton and Adelia Detweiler are top notch folks. Order with confidence. Books are always good, but I think casette tapes can be very helpful, too. Two cassettes that I believe Maher still carries are Bob Neller's tape (his substitute sounds and his distant voice are awesome!), and Bill Boley's advanced vent tape. Bill talks about the distant voice, the fly buzzing sound, the ring announcer (echo voice), and the drinking trick. Good stuff. That reminds me, I haven't done the drinking trick in my act for several years. I really should put it back in. I hope everyone has an amazing 2003! Joe L.

Hi,
I think joining a ventriloquism mailing list is also a good help. There are several ventriloquism mailing lists on Yahoogroups http://www.yahoogroups.com and others groups. The one which is very active is Worldvents on Yahoogroups. The members are very helpful, so you can ask your question there. Harris, Joe and I are members of that group. Regards, |

Greetings Magician81,
The Maher Vent Course, in my opinion, is by far and way the best investment any new or beginning aspiring vent could make. As stated above, there are some good and very helpful books. But if you are serious about properly learning ventriloquism, do yourself a BIG favor and get your hands on the Maher Course. The Maher Course starts you out with proper breathing and facial muscle development. I haven't read or seen many books on vent with this type of in depth preliminary instruction. In addition, you are able to contact Clinton at the Maher Studio with questions and help, no book offers that. I started with the Maher Course in the early 70's. I purchased my original course from Fred Maher himself! I have a copy of the "new" and revised course. It's great! So invest in the Maher course. You can't go wrong. Continued success. Best Regards, Doc Dazzal |

Good Luck! Try to see Jay Johnson perform as he is a great performer (ventriloquist)!
