flourish dude Inner circle from ? But I know where I am going! 1195 Posts |
I just watched the "Dog Dish of Death" tape from Brian Flora. I think the spinning plates would fit well in my birthday show. It will help make the child a star and provide a great picture for the parents.
Now the hard part. I really don't like his routine. I thought about just bringing the kid up spinning the plate (1 in each hand), pose and snap goes the picture. Can you folks help me think of a way to make this more entertaining? Thanks

A good way is to use some sort of transition. You can hand the child a stick to hold on each hand, start a plate spinning on the end of your finger and then transfer the plate to the stick.
Hope this helps. Cheers ML |

I think I like the idea of building it up all throughout the show. My birthday intro has the birthday child come up and we get introduced. I could start off my saying, "Later you'll get to perform the 'Famous Spinning Dog Food Dish of Death.'"
Then after every other effect or so, I'll bring it back up (building) then tell a story how only superheroes and supermodels have been known to perform such a feat. Are you a superhero or a supermodel? Well with the help of everyone in the audience and our special magic word for today I believe you can do it! Everyone clap real loud to the beat of the song YMCA karaoke style (I start song). Get the plates going, act as if I am having trouble with the plate (ALA CLOWN STYLE) give it to them one at a time then after he/she has both of them I strike a dramatic pose by the Child for the picture. In A birthday show I would not play the music I would have them chant the Childs name. I just came up with the routine --what does everyone think?

I do a plate spinning routine during my show, and it goes down well.
I get two volunteers up --usually a boy and a girl-- get their names muddled up a bit, then show them my plate and a few tricks. I give them balloon hats to protect their heads. I get everyone to clap as I pass it from my stick to theirs. Then I have them rubbing their tummies, patting their heads and turning around while holding plates. I finish off with shouting match to decide who did the best, the girls or the boys, and diplomatically call it a draw. That's the compressed version. It takes a little over ten minutes |

My plate spinning routine uses 1 volunteer and 3 plates. Start by getting to person to try and spin a plate (the hard way). Since they are unlikely to be able to do this you then start a plate for them give it to them and then steal it back using a second plate stick (there are lots of variations on this business - I do two steals using the stick and the third steal using my finger). Get the helper to stand on one leg <applause>, no legs (jumps or sits down) then suggest they are ready for the ultimate trick 3 plates. The plates are spun by you and the helper holds one in each hand and one is balanced with base of stick on childs t-shirt or hood and stick resting on back of head. If this is a kids party and they are wearing those little pointy hats then make use of this.
The best plates I have found are the flexi-plates sold by http://www.butterfingers.com Nigel I should have written http://www.butterfingers.co.uk as was pointed out to me off-forum. Apologies to anybody following the previous link and getting more than they were expecting. Nigel

The plates look wonderful... I used to have a spinnng plate in my show. But problem is that when I perform out door, the wind usually make it impossible to do... I didn;t know is it because my plate is plastic and is light and has this problem... Do you have this problem with metal plate? or some heavier ones?

If you get the dube metal plates they are probably the best for outdoor work (but very pricey) visit http://www.dube.com, I've always used the heavier plastic plates and occasionally had problems with the wind (pardon me) but rarely does it make plates impossible. Even if it does then you can get a lot of humour out of the situation, get everybody to blow at the same time etc etc.
