There are two lengths of rope.
Each one can burn in exactly one hour. They are not necessarily of the same length or width as each other. They also are not of uniform width (may be wider in middle than on the end), thus burning half of the rope is not necessarily 1/2 hour. By burning the ropes, how do you measure exactly 45 minutes worth of time? Cliff |

Cliff: I sent you a possible solution as well. I don't think it's the one you had in mind, and it makes a couple questionable assumptions, but...
Well, 90 minutes is easy, 45 minutes had me stumped, what I sent you is the best I could come up with for 45 minutes. |

Hello Psy-Kosh,
I got you're PM. Not the correct answer, but another way of looking at it. Cliff |

Light both ends of one rope, and one end of the other at the same time. When the rope with both ends lit finishes burning, light the other end of the remaining rope. When that rop finishes burning, 45 minutes have elapsed from the moment you first set light to the ropes.
