Hello:
I've always thought the "Soup Plates" chapter from one of the Rice's Encyclopedia's was very interesting. For years, I've wanted to do something with them - partly because I've never seen a single performer do the soup plates. I think audiences would be intrigued by this. I'm pretty sure that Morrissey Magic fairly recently started offering a really nice looking set; I've only seen them on various websites, but they look good. Has anyone here ever done any effect with soup plates? Did it play strongly? Thanks for any insight. Ron |

Ron,
You said it first but I'll have to agree with you. The plates hold my interest too. I do have the Henchen (sp?) Broken and Restored plate for a stage routine. I would love to combine them into about a 15 minute connected routine. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Maybe checking the Okito presentation would help. It is in Okito on Magic, Albo books and a couple of other places.

The Morrissey plates that have been available for years is a confetti to double Dove production. I seen a mall magician use them in the 1980's. They never advertised them for some reason. Show-Biz (George Schlindler) currently has them on his web site. They are white soup bowls.
I suppose they could be used for silks as well, don't know! |

If George is selling it, it works! I wish everyone in the industry had that kind of record with me.
Thanks George! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Spellbinder, Fred Goode and I have been collaborating on coming up with soup plate substitutes, on the grounds that soup plates are no longer in common use and young people don't know what the heck they are. However, the principles and moves used for a lot of the old soup plate magic can be adapted to things like hub-caps, frisbees, pet food dishes, and even a pair of spirit slates.
We started out the Wiz Kid Medium (actually, he is an Extra Large) with a routine for the Spirit Slates, which, after he gets the usual chalk message from the resident spirit, the slates start turning up lost items from the dearly departed via soup plate handling. This has increased the comedy value of the routine without losing the spooky aspects of it.

Jim,
With the company you are keeping there, anything could happen! Keep us posted. I've always wanted a routine of this sort that instead of Any Drink Called for is Any Dish (food item) Called for. (Do you want fries with that? Chili with a thumb?) Work at it! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Are they used like the "think a drink" effect? Not asking for a exposure but would like to know more about the plates.

StevenMT: If you don't have the Rice Encyclopedia, try Tarbell, Volume 2, chapter 30 for a lesson in soup plates.
Bob Sanders: Great idea! One of Jim's Wiz Kids has a "Magic Chef" act and that would fit in nicely. Someone orders by pointing at a menu and the "Chef" opens up the plates to reveal a "pun" version of the order: French Flies for French Fries (look, they're wearing tiny berets!), a huge hunk of (sponge) cheese on a flimsy burger and so on. This could actually be done with my old traditional soup plates instead of the soup plate substitutes we have been working on.

Spellbinder,
Would the transfer of power require "More flour to you"? How are you going to keep the Toco Belles quiet? It sounds fun to me. Make it happen. Bob |
