This may not be the most intelligent question in the world. But, as a new member I couldn't help wondering... what special event took place on 11th July this year (or possibly the previous day) to get 114 people accessing this site at the same time? Can anyone help?

Truth be told, there probably weren't 114 people online at the time, though the scripts said there were. Back when this number was recorded, the scripts that tracked how many people online worked differently. If someone was on AOL, say, and came to the Café, they would be counted when they first got here (before logging in) as a guest. If they didn't log in, every time they went to a different page they would be added to the list again. The original listing would expire in ten minutes, but we still would get poeple who were listed twice and probably several times as a "Guest" in the who's online list.
Gene edited the scripts to fix this a week or so ago, so the number you see now for "currently browsing" is more accurate. You will sometimes see a name in there twice - usually mine or a moderator's name. We sometimes keep more than one browser window open to the Café when performing Café maintenance functions, which causes the duplicate entries. I have seen as many as 73 actual people online though, under the new system. We do get very busy here! Mary |
