Okay, so Blaine didn't do 9:00 minutes, big surprise. What was all the hype about?

All I will say is this. In the Knevil sequence, did you notice the fact that almost all of the stunt footage they showed of EK crashing?
Or the not so subtle segment with Ralston, who lost a hand in his endeavors? Or the rather outre footage of a lifeless Audrey being pulled out of the ocean? I don't know if DB planned to ALMOST make it, but the near miss made for much better T.V. Though it wouldn't be considered, the man really does deserve an emmy for the amazing dramatic chops he displayed. D.

Classic Houdini style....he dragged it out for 2 hours and people were tearing up in the audience. Did ya'll notice the Criss Angel commercial half way through! These are good signs....magic is making dough and they even slipped some glass eating in there! These are historic moments.....when we look at those old Houdini photos where he was jumping in the river handcuffed, we think they are cool.....100 years from now they will think the same about this moment. Blaine's show was all the best from the "That's Incredible!" TV show brought to 2006! Criss Angel is using all the other stuff from that show! I'm bugging out on how these images are being used to create intensity..........powerful manipulation.

Not had in depth details on this but according to Sky News, BBC News and ITV here in the UK it came across as a farce,,,I think Blaine cooked his goose over here with his Higleys Exhibit in a glass box gag,,,credability seems to escape him but modern speckies are cute and not so gullible as used to be.
To do or attempt what could just be possible would be entertaining, but to pretend to do or attempt the impossible and fail is just plain stupid. Again the $$$ syndrome seems to have been at work. Ken. |

An emmy? The man "cried" endlessly afterwards... he cried and cried. I did not see ONE tear fall from his eyes. Do people still REALLY think he has some sort of superhuman powers?
I wonder how much $$$ it cost just to rope off the area for those 2 hours.

David Blaine is not a Higley's Zibit. Rumors are unfounded. Zibits do not have shoelaces and can hold their breath indefinately...especially in France.

I watched it, and though it went a half hour too long. I generally liked the show.
If I could've been looking at a Zibbit, that would've been my preference. They have more personality.

The following is a post on a freediving forum written TWO WEEKS AGO!
Re: [News] Famed Magician In Freediving World Record Stunt -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wow, great thread. I think I'll weigh in with my 2 cents. David Blaine is an illusionist and a performer similar in style to Harry Houdini. His goal is to entertain and amaze us. He walks a fine line between endurance and "magic" flustering our attempts at assessing the reality of the event. Judging by all the interest and passion in this thread I'd say he's already succeeded in capturing our full attention. Eric F asked why he "nearly died of hypothermia after 61 hours in an ice block". Was this fact real and independently confirmed, or were we led to believe it via some clever marketing ? I don't know. The Guinness Book rejected his ice endurance claim as "little different from living in an igloo or an ice hotel." http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/europe/09/04/uk.blaine/ It is my contention that David could better achieve his goals by not breaking Tom's 8:58 AIDA record. Let me try and explain... It's been my experience that when dealing with the average non-freediver (the bulk of the audience) they are amazed by the fact that there are humans who can hold their breath for 4 minutes let alone 9. I think many of them would be huge skeptics of David beating a world record and accomplishing an 8:58+ breath hold and dismiss the entire event as a sham. If however he were to come up after holding his breath for 7 minutes, but short of an established record, I think the average Joe would become a believer and start asking themselves "How did he do that ?". David Blaine would then be successful without successfully breaking a record. Well if the above turns out to be true then I think it's pretty obvious what's in it for the Performance Freediving team. #1. A (hopefully) well paying gig #2. Great promotion for freediving with the average joe asking how can I learn to hold my breath like that ? #3. Coverage of PFD training "An inside look at his training will be shown on the ABC special" http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/0....ap/index.html Any which way I think I'll pass by the event and say hi to the PFD crew and tap on the glass like the rest of the sidewalk gawkers __________________ Signature ?!?! Which leads the public to believe that MAYBE this is ALL just tricks and there is NOTHING superhuman about David Blaine! Blaine is NOT playing this for the moment...he is doing this so that he will go down in HISTORY...JUST LIKE HOUDINI! Blaine has a very smart group of people managing and advising him. These are people who are VERY hip to magic history, as is evident by some of the magic performed last night. This is about immortality...Blaine is in this for the long hall. The magic that Blaine pulled off last night is the same that a great mentalist would pull off...they will miss one to make the HITS that much more dramatic. By missing Blaine is NOW the underdog...NOT the establishment...He is of the people, for the people, by the people...A brilliant move was made last night. He has won the hearts of the people...Blaine missed last night...but his NEXT hit...will be RIGHT ON THE MONEY...believe you me...and we will all be there to watch! Bless his black little heart!

See the UK press for a different point of view and then read the back editions regarding his fish bowl sitting, if only he could see himself and the ridicule results he could then be guided by public opinion instead of $$$ Promotion influence.
I feel that the US way of looking at this is way off of the UK vision. We have crop circles and Uri Geller etc etc but deep down its taken as a farce, as is Blaine. Ken. |

Yes. People seem to forget he is a magician, a performer... It is all make-believe.

David Blaine Dead? Associated Press- Baghdad, Iraq In a stunning exhibition last night, world famous showman David Blaine has apparently blown himself to pieces. At the conclusion of his latest stunt, "Insurgent Insight", where the illusionist-turned-survivalist spent two weeks sealed in a ten foot glass cube engaging in "training activities", he emerged to walk to the center of a cordoned off area of the city, strapped an explosive vest around his chest, and detonated himself. Although no one was harmed by the blast, the closest spectators were sprayed with a fine, red mist. Blaine himself has not been seen since the explosion. David Blaine proposed "Insurgent Insight" a year ago, saying, "I think this is a great idea- it will bring attention to the plight of the Iraqi people, and the audacity will assure my fame for all time." Like his last stunt- spending a week in a giant aquarium, Blaine risked great bodily harm through hunger and dehydration. The temperature in the cube at times reached 150 degrees, and Blaine resorted to burying himself beneath the sand to avoid heat-exhaustion. No one was quite sure what to expect at the conclusion of the stunt, not even Blaine's support crew. A large area was cordoned off, and a remote camera was set up near the center. Blaine walked to the center of the area, faced the camera, and donned the equipment he created himself during his voluntary confinement. He then winked at the camera, and exploded. As the remote monitor showed nothing but static, there was a full five minutes of silence from both the audience and Blaine's crew. Theodore Brown, the technical lead of Blaine's support team, was reported to have said, "Showmanship to the very end. Houdini couldn't have done it better himself!" Currently, global speculation is running rampant- did Blaine somehow escape death? Or has his body been scattered across the desert sands? After the event, a spectator, Cpl. Daniel Sternings (24, from Lincoln, NB, USA) was asked his opinion. "Well, I think the whole thing was in really bad taste," he was quoted as saying, "But fake or not, I'll certainly remember it for the rest of my life." * With apologies for poor taste

You forgot to mention that Blaine did re-appear many years later as Osama Bin Liner expert in disguise and the art of not being found. All the money paid to him went on chemicals to preserve his body upon death so that once more he could be displayed in a glass box for eternity as a Higley Exhibit. What a shame that in the years to come, due to those chemicals used, DNA would be impossible to extract from his remains so no one can knock him because no one knows who he is!!!Or was!!!
Time to go and sleep this off! Ken. |

Ya'll are almost as good as David Blaine when it come to shameless self promotion!!! I'm not with any of the haters when it comes to Blaine.....he's seriously doing historic things. Any of us could do it....but he's the only one DOING IT. It's sort of like the sports reporters who try to tell Mike Tyson how to bite off an ear the right way! He was the only that was crazy enough to do the biting! Now he is immortal....crazy, but immortal....and wearing a real ear necklace.....or was it a Higley?
