Hey guys at the last magic castle junior meeting I was poking around the library and noticed a section on hypnosis, there were a ton of books and I just picked one off the shelf (i don't remember the tital) But anyway, I started reading and became very interested, I was wondering what books, or dvds I should buy, and if there are any magic castle members what books they recomend from the library. Thanks guys

I am not from the magic castle, but I recommend the New Encyclopedia Of Stage Hypnotism by Ormond Mcgill. Basically everyone recommends this. I bought it and it's a great read. I am sure there are more good books, though.
I suggets you also check out videos on the subject. Just do a search and you will get everything. Good luck! |

My suggestion is to read everything you can get your hands on. Also go out and see every stage hypnosis show that you can as well. This will give you a good idea of whether this is something that you want to pursue or not.
New Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotist by Ormond McGill is a good start. Hypnosis for Dummies by Roberta Temes is another. However, in reading McGill, be aware that there are several things in there that are out of date and a couple that are flat-out dangerous - notably the carotid-artery pressure point method and the one where he talks about using a spray bottle of chloroform of all things! Obviously, these were included for completeness' sake, but do NOT try these! Chloroform is a carcinogen and the carotid artery method can cause strokes and, in some rare circumstances death! So run away from both of those methods, please! Just another good argument for getting classroom training...! Lee Darrow, C.H.

Cartoid artery-pressure and chloroform are also not recommended for self hypnosis.

Unless of course you were planning on using them in your stage show then I would suggest you try them on yourself first and hang on with all you got :>)

NO SEERIOUSLY what other things would you reccomend.
Do these books teach hypnosis fully, if I pick em up can I actually perform them (in a safe way ofcourse). |

Please do a look through on the thread on one-on-one hypnosis as well as a search on safety in hypnosis. There's a whole series of posts in here on training and safety which eventually will be added to the FAQ.

One of the best ways to learn hypnosis is to hypnotise yourself! Buy some tapes on self hypnosis and listen to them then transcribe them.

Shrink, that's a great starting method! Also, I would suggest browsing some general information sites like http://www.hypnosis.com http://www.ngh.net and http://www.hypnosisinmedia.com (which is more of an informational site about hypnosis in movies and popular media, but it gives an idea of what the PUBLIC thinks hypnosis is) for openers.

Essentially the same book, version of the original Abbotts publication. You will be buying the new encyclopedia since that's what is what is in print.
