Does anyone use the "centre tear" with this effect?
You get the spectator to write the card in the circle etc and then you know what the card due to the secret behind it;) And then your set to go saying that know one knows what your card is apart from you... (then you come out with an Invisible Pack) and say i have a prediction, show face up cards and one face down one...get spectator to say their card for the first time and then reveal your prediction!!! Hope you get my drift! Bonus that it doesn't look too much like a trick deck as I have had no one question me on it. Davé

Sorry Dave, the strength of the invisible deck is that the deck is already out in plain sight prior to them revealing the thought of card. If you do the center tear, the spectator while reconstructing the trick in their mind later will assume that once they write the card down the magician had a way of seeing what they wrote. It's not a complete answer, but it is all they need to think that they know how it's done.

Allan, I completely agree with you, but your deck switch seems too simple to do it several times in your performance.
Steve Bedwell won the champion of the competition of International Magic Studio's convention one time, his final trick is superb using this little prop, check it out. Michael Lam

I use the excuse for writing down the card on paper because then everyone in the audience can see what card she is thinking about.
i can appreciate that people can trace it back but that only happens with awkward spectators, and i never do this trick to people who heckle in the slightest. Davé

Cardfreakhk, I use a deck switch alot & have never even been questioned about it much less caught. You mention a little gimmick but did not give details. Please elaborate.
Yavid 2001, If you have the thought of card written down so other members of the audience can see it, I have an idea for you. First unless the spectator passes around the paper, only those close will see it. My suggestion is after they have determined the card they have thought of & you are ready to show the card upside down in the deck, tell them that the deck is out & you are committed. Tell them that you want them to also be committed. Ask them to name their card so that there are witnesses to which card they chose. Only after they have named the card do you take them out of the box & do the spread. I think that this tact will make the trick stronger because now everyone knows the card that was chosen. |

On Sankey's Secret Files Vol. 2, Jay Sankey has a different way of 'presenting' the I.D. Even for those laypeople that may know what an I.D. is, I think his presentation would make people forget that it COULD be an I.D.
I won't give away what he does, (which kind of seems pointless to even post it then, doesn't it?) but for anyone that has the video, they'll know what I'm referring to. The name of his version is called "X". (there's a hint for ya!).

Invisable Deck for me is an "out!" For what ever reason you "blow" it, it's a life saver. I have made my deck out of one of those mini decks, and found a case that fits it. It's in my right rear pocket all night at my venue. Sometimes I use it as a follow-up to Kneppers Kolassal Killer. Hey let's see that again. Oh okay.
You now have the power. |

In my area I have yet to come across anyone who is familiar with the ID. In my presentation I first get out the ID in the case and place it in plain sight. Then I hand the spectator(s) a minature deck of cards in a clear plastic case (got mine as a souvenir while on vacation).
The spectator then selects a card, places it on the bottom of the small deck, puts the deck back in the clear case. I then place the small deck case bottom side up so the selection is revealed, then find the matching card in the ID. When the large card is laid next to the small card in the clear case there is no question as to which card the spectator selected; and the visual impact, in my opinion, is greater than with a verbally selected card. Just my opinion, but works good for me. Bill Beach Ohio USA |

I agree with the posts against the gimmicked invisible decks.
Using a memorised invisible deck is even more powerful as they can spread the cards. I personally ask them to go through the process of thinking of a card at which point most people will actually start to name the card.. as soon as you have worked out what they are saying, raise your hand and stop them. Say, "You don't need to tell me, just hold THAT card in your mind until we need it.." Now perform the first half of the memorised invisible deck in a casual manner until you are set. Place the cards on the table. So far the trick doesn't seem to have started as all you have been doing is explaining that this was the deck of cards in the dream you had. Now you are completely set. Ask them to pick up the deck and name the card they have pictured (and already inadvertantly told you) When they have named their card and they are still holding the deck, point out that up until that very second they could have chosen any card (unfortunately untrue... but near enough Build up the tension until you too are excited at the possibility of succeeding. Get them to reveal it. This in my mind is the ultimate of this kind. Second only to any card at any number. Hope this helps Cyril |

Invisible deck is only as great as your presentation. A little hint: Only perform this routine after you have established that you are a Magician. In other words perform a couple of other card routines, that are awsome, then give the cards a rest while going into a ring, money or silk routine. Then close with the invisible deck. If and only if you are a CREDIBLE Magician in the audience's eyes, Nobody will question the deck. You have already PROVEN that you can do the impossible.Plus they'll be recovering from the shock of real magic happening. I love the invisible deck...I sleep with it!
If you just walk up to someone cold and perform it, the trick can still play, but all the focus is on the deck, since you have not yet established a solid foundation of magical happenings. However, if you really build up to it like a Hollywod Movie or a Beautiful song, the credibility is there and the audience will expect it and enjoy the experience.

Here's an idea that I have not tried yet and am wondering if anyone else has thought of it:
Let's say you are performing for a birthday party or someone you really want to impress. Get a copy of there signature somehow before hand. Duplicate their singnature on all odd cards. Have them name an odd card and turn it over in their mind so that it is the only reversed card. Not only that, tell them to mentally sign their name across the face. Open the deck showing all the cards are face up except one. They take it out and it is their card with their signature. If you didn't want to do a signature you could just write some comment like Happy Birthday or something. Also if you didn't want to narrow their choice down to just odd cards then you could have two decks set up and after they name their card pull the appropriate deck out of your pocket. Again, this is something that you would probably do only on special occasions.
