Hi,
My 8-year-old nephew is having a sports-themed birthday party in a few weeks and I've been asked to perform. I don't want to do all sports tricks (I'm going to include a dove pan routine, Professor's Nightmare, version of 20th century silks, and so on), but I wanted to include at least one. I thought about a torn and restored baseball card. 1. Will 8-year-olds appreciate a torn and restored card trick if I get them involved? 2. Can you give me ideas of other possible sports-theme tricks? Thank you very much! -Dave |

See if you can find a copy of Bill Severn's Best Magic. A library is a real good source.
In it (p. 142) there is a trick using a rope with a basball theme patter. Basically it goes like this: You have a pape bag and a piece of rope. You ask who are good catchers, etc. You then tie a knot in the rope and then throw the knot to one of the kids. Of course when it comes off the rope it becomes invisible. Do this three or so times then coil up the rope and place it in the empty bag. Now you have the kids throw the invisible knots back and you catch them in the bag. At the end you pull out the rope which now has three or whatever number of knots tied in it. Show the bag empty and move to the next effect. Pleanty of good opportunities for comedy and interaction. If you can't find the book let me know and I can send you a copy. On another note--anytime you find one of Bill Severn's magic books, buy it. There is a ton of good, simple, and entertaining stuff in his books.

Eight year olds can remember Cards and Suits, so it can be done. Just make sure everyone get to see the card just in case the assistant forgets it.
With a Seance Cloth you could float a glove a baseball bat, toss out some sport balls (hopefully they don't bounce and break something) or have your face appear with a catcher mask. Do it to the tune, "Take me out to the ball game"
