I found the Brass Card Punches from James Risers website.
What do you think about it and what effects do yo recommend for this utility tool? |

It's probably a fine punch. I would suggest Glenn Bishops "Punch Deck Pro" DVD for ideas on magic effects using punch work.

Risers punch is as fine a piece of eqipment as you'll buy for pegging. I've got one, and I'll never be without it.
Glenn's DVD has some unique and interesting stuff in it regarding pegging. Also, "Marlo in Spades" has a section on the punch deal. "The Phantom(s) of the Card Table" is also a must have. It contains details on Walter Scotts punch work, which demonstrate how other "real work" can be combined with the punch deal in order to do some amazing effects. |

I'm a bit turned off to most punches after seeing some of the real work, actual punches are so tiny and have no moving parts, any sort of "stapler" type configure where you have to work the card in and squeeze and get the device out of play seems only good for pre-show stuff. Sure, you could put on a pull but that is just making things difficult.
So in short, I guess they are good if you can justify the price to use them for pre-show punching, but imho compared to "actual" punches they just seem way too bulky. |

I agree, these peggers are primarily for magicians who prep decks ahead of time.
Not wanting anything on them if called out, the cheat would most likely just use a fingernail, or at most a glued on point. |
