Is Richard indicating that the initial run (or the first set of copies relased and mailed out) had these "defects" in the book and that this preoblem was correct for subsequent run(s)? Or, is Richard indicating that the defects were caught before any copies were released and all copies that are purchased will be free of these defects. I'm assuming the latter but I'd just like to know in any event. Thanks for any info regarding this issue. Mike

The book needs to be reprinted, so no copies have shipped.

Mine arrived yesterday. No review yet, of course -- but the book itself is beautiful. And as I opened it to start reading, it dawned on me that there's a *lot* there -- a ton of photographs (they must have fixed the problems because the photos are superb) and a *HUGE* amount of text.
Some initial thoughts: - I've only seen and heard Vernon via the 'Revelations' DVD and a couple other VHS interview tapes, but Vernon writing sounds *exactly* like Vernon speaking. You can sorta visualize Vernon talking these columns (and maybe that's what he did, I don't know) because the flow of the words is exactly the same. - The photographs are great. Most have captions, too, so it's nice to be able to page through to look at the photographs and see the date or location. - Expensive, yes, but probably well worth the price. The book, as they say, is very handsomely printed and looks beautiful. I've said this before, but I'm relatively new to magic, so I look at this as a good way to read (for the first time, in my case) all the Vernon columns and get some (or, in the case of the 'Vernon Touch,' *a lot*) of context. |

I have not yet had a chance to read it either boinko but must agree with your initial assessment. A BEAUTIFUL book. Richard did a great service by waiting until it was done correctly! As I have a number of old Genii magazines with the Professors column, it is far from complete & I look forward to FINALLY spending some quality time with this book. Thank you Richard!

Vernon was THE magician of the last century. If you perform magic, you have been influenced by Vernon, whether you know it or not. This book is as close as most of us will ever get to experiencing The Professor. So what if there are only a few tricks? There was only one Vernon, and we are not likely to see the likes of him again in our lifetimes. Buy the book and revel in the man.

Bob,
Well said! I have TONS of books, DVD's & tricks. Do I really need any more? Not if I'm sane (though it's a lot of fun!). What we get with this is a taste of the mind of one of the absolute greats of all time. Joe

I am being dissapointed with this book. I was hoping it would be having clever tricks in it but it is just him talking about things.
Think not what magic can do for you, but what you can do for magic.

My feelings are quite the opposite, Juan. As excited as I was to receive this book I had no idea that it would so loftily exceed the already high expectations I had for it. Vernon has released a vast collection of magic over the years (at least 32 individual publications noted inside the cover of Vernon Touch), and I have much of this published material. The last thing I need is another book of tricks (just ask my wife). What I am particularly enjoying about this book (aside from the brilliant anecdotes and absorbing historical information) is the insight it offers into the creation and development of much of his own material and many of the works of others that helped shape the art throughout the years. I have barely scratched the surface of this book and I am already lamenting the fact that eventually I will turn the last page and it will come to an end. I guess, at that point, I'll just have to start back at the beginning again.

Ya' gotta' do a bit of your own research when you're buying a $60.00 book. "The Vernon Touch" column in Genii was never about magic tricks as such, and this is an assembly of his "Vernon Touch" columns. This book is one of the best books a magician could ever read...Period Thousands of thoughts and anecdotes, like the one about Vernon and his son going to see Doug Henning at the Cort Theatre when "The Magic Show" played on Broadway. Vernon writes that Doug got him "really good seats" Reading this much of the Professors wisdom in one place can make you think about magic in a very different, very positive way. ....and it's not like there's NO tricks in it. It contains one of the only full descriptions of "The Trick That Fooled Houdini" I've ever read, and it's right from the horses mouth! |

It's clear that you don't understand the importance of Dai Vernon to magic, and why magicians are extremely interested in what Vernon's thoughts are on the subject of magic.
So sell the book, and have a nice day.......and you won't have to read the ramblings of "an old man" any further. Best of all, I won't have to read your negative thoughts on the book! Perhaps you can comment further when you take the time to learn a bit more about Vernon and his contributions to the art. |

like hearing an old man who is saying stories and anecdotes. It can be being boring at times. In the mid seventies I attended a Vernon lecture at one of the SAM conventions. The "old man" started around 9 PM. When I left, exhausted, at 2:30 AM, the "stories and anecdotes" were still flowing. Vernon had lost none of his energy. I heard he went on until after 4 AM and then went out with the guys. He was in his early 80's at the time. This was one of the great magic experiences of my life, one that has stayed with me for 30 years. Vernon was a link to nearly every great magician of the 20th century. If you think, Juan, that Vernon has nothing to teach you, I suggest you put the book aside for a few years and come back to it when you are more experienced in magic. You'll be surprised how much less boring the "old man" has become. Best wishes, Bob |

I find great pleasure in reading the book. Vernons stories and thoughts are of great value and it can be applied to magic and make your clever tricks better. It isn't for the trick collector, but for the magician who appreciates the art and the history it is dynomite.
