There absolutely are copyright concerns with posting Doug Henning ( or David Copperfield, or Mark Wilson, or Ricky Jay, or anyone's) professional performances on the Internet. Simply put, it is unlikely you own the rights to broadcast the performances which were originally taped for broadcast. It is a new medium with new methods of disbursement but overall the tiny type at the end of the show means you need permission to rebroadcast.

Maybe we can find out if originals of the specials are archieved. If they are not, it may be difficult to find quality recordings that have not begun to deteriorate. Can't believe it would be that difficult to gain permission to a magic organization wanting to put together a tribute to Doug.

I also agree that Doug Henning sort of restarted magic's popularity. But most folks don't have his shows taped and so therefore just have vague memories of some guy with funky hair and no longer quite remember just how good he actually was.
So for those of you who get odd responses - my guess is that is why. They don't really remember him, they just remember a 60's style image. But on the other hand, they remember him. And that's pretty cool when you think about it. |

I'd be happy if his infectious positive attitude about magic were better remembered.
As to the tricks and his particular style of clothes (hippie + tophat) ... that can stay in the 1970s. Was he the first to get a PhD in magic?

Probably, as he was studying magic with a grant from the Canadian government. He got a large sum of cash to travel and work with people like Dai Vernon, and others.
Those that really know about Doug would be Charles Reynolds (creative consultant to Doug), Jim Steinmeyer, likewise, and Johnny Gaughan as well as his main background assistant, Glen Priest. These were the folks that made his magic what it was. Doug really believed there was a Unicorn in HIS garden.

Pete-
Don't forget about Willie Kennedy who toured with Doug for many years and was responsible for making so much of the magic happen... Those of us who saw Doug perform on TV and in person, and who were fortunate enough to meet him in person will be forever grateful for him putting a face of kindness onto the craft of making magic. |

I just saw a nice lot of Henning material on the world's largest auction site. I also came up with 40+ hits for him. If you guys are serious about Henning, you may want to take a look. It's not my material and I don't know the sellers. I collect Houdini material. I have picked up some nice pieces on this site for my collection.
Good Luck, Kevin

Yes. I didn't mention it because it is a gray area on here.

I don't believe Doug had a PhD in anything, unless he was given an honorary doctorate at some point. The government grant he received was from the Canada Council, which provides grants for the arts, but does not offer grants for academic purposes (those are provided by another branch of the government). While the grant was to "study" magic -- that did not mean studying at degree-granting institutions.
In fact, I don't think that grant was even for "magic" -- at least not officially. Doug knew he'd be unable to get a grant for magic, but was able to convince the Canada Council to offer him a grant for theatrical arts. Besides ... for someone to receive a PhD in Magic, there would have to be a school offering such a PhD program. |

Doug got a degree in magic, but I don't believe it was a PhD. He was allowed to study it under a theatre arts program. He studied mime with Marcel Marceau and magic with Dai Vernon. There was a big hoorah about it in Genii Magazine during the early 1970's when this happened.
Getting the videos might be a big problem. The videos are copyrighted, and belong to either the network or the estate. There may be some kind of co-ownership involved. Or, it may belong to the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi or his estate. This is a very complex situation. Also, if such a project is published, the story of his termination of all his employees would need to be told truthfully. There was a reason that his props went so cheaply. I have a sword through body that belonged to him.

I think even the most glowing of the tributes here fail to do Doug Henning justice. For some decades before his Broadway appearance in The Magic Show, the magician was a novelty act, often a well paid one who worked the very finest venues. I'm talking about Cardini, Jay Marshall, Channing Pollack, etc. They were great performers but not true stars in the public's mind. Henning changed the atmosphere and attitude of show business, paving the way for Coppervield, Sigfried and Roy, Burton and many other who now have entire shows built around them.

Hey there,
I have posted a similar post in several magic forums. For the past few years I have tried to get Doug Henning a star on the Canada Walk of Fame. Unlike the US counter part one can not just buy a star, they must win the star. This is done simply by having a number of devoted fans fill out a form on a website. Names like Shania Twain, Jim Carey, Kiefer Sutherland have all been given a star. It's all about the fans. I guess magicians just don't have enough time or resourses to get the numbers required. I understand this would appear to be the case but when folks like Walter Ostanek get a star ...come on you know Walter...the Polka King ... why not Doug .... Got a second? Go to: http://www.canadaswalkoffame.com/contest.......xml.htm Cheers, Shawn Farquhar |
