When doing the Cups and Balls, I've always introduced the cups, performed a few cup-through-cup moves, and then introduced the balls from my pocket. My thinking is, if I'm going to make the balls appear, then why not the cups and the wand too. After all, the trick is called the Cups and Balls, not the Cups.
The appearance of the balls in the routine by Rafael Benatar (which is basically the Garcia routine?) is too obvious to me, even though he slows it down to the point where you almost think it couldn't be done. Still, it's the only logical conclusion. However, I do like the appearance of the balls in the Mendoza routine, which uses a combo set and that slide-off move. The combo set makes for the extra convincer. Michael Ammar's routine is unique unto himself. I can't imagine anyone but him doing it. Maybe. And I have to admit, many years after seeing his routine, the one thing I remembered was the appearance of that third ball. Even though I watched it on video, his misdirection was so strong, with the two wand spins, it took me completely by surprise. One of those few, truly magical moments in my life. |

Willard the Wizard used to pluck the balls from the end of the wand. So did Charles Bertram. It's all personal preference.

In Larry Jennings' one-cup routine, the cup and all three balls magically appear. That's a lovely routine.
As Bill has said, what you do is down to personal preference; whether it works or not is down to your own presentation. Richard
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

Check out Michael Skinner's routine on the Houdini magic videos. He starts with one ball from his pocket, and produces the rest as the routine progresses. Very magical, and not at all obvious.

I used to start off with one then two would just 'show up' and I figgered I might as well use them since it seems like I ain't got no choice.
But I later cut that out. It was cute but I had stronger stuff and the routine was longer than I liked. That business added a minute to an already over long routine. |

Have you thought of producing them as David Roth does for his three ball routine and then work out something for the cups....Use David's three ball routine as a starting point to build a production of the balls for the trick.
It is on one of the Stars of Magic tapes (third one he did) and is a lecture. Later, Mike |

You can also produce one from the wand, then split it into two balls, then produce a third one from YFL using YFM.

Geez, Bill, I'm bad with acronyms, even though I work with them all the time (I copyedit physics papers). Can you give me a better hint for YFL and YFM or PM me?

YFL -- Your favorite location.
YFM -- Your favorite method. There was a gag going around a few years ago. I don't know who wrote it. YOUR FAVORITE CARD TRICK Have a card selected by your favorite method. Let the spectator return it to the deck. Control it to your favorite location by your favorite method. Reveal it by your favorite method. Available from Your Favorite Dealer. Seriously, the best way to introduce the balls: "Audience -- these are the balls. Balls, this is the audience." Or not!

Many years ago I got some of those tiny craft eyes from the hobby store, the kind people use for craft projects, with the little black pieces that wiggle around inside. I glued a couple of them to a sponge ball. Sometimes when doing close-up I would set that little sponge ball head/face on the table and act as if I was performing directly for him. It offered a lot of opportunities for humor (as well as a little character scapegoat to blame if/when something went awry). He never did have an actual name, and I don't recall that I ever introduced it per se, other than to simply set him out there to watch me do a trick. |

Although this is not the coin site, that bit with the little eyes is used in a trick I bought from Sweden, SpellOnU, called "Keep an Eye on the Coin," where you do a few tricks with a coin and the final revelation is a coin with those silly little "eyes."
I haven't tried it out yet, but thanks for reminding me. The idea certainly intrigued me. |
