Can you explain why venus doesn't look the brightest from earth when it is the closest to us? actually it is significantly more bright when it is most far from earth it can be.

Keep in mind that Venus doesn't give off light of its own. The light we see from Venus is reflected from the Sun.
When Venus is closest to us, that means Venus and the Earth are on the same side of the Sun. At that angle, very little of the light from Venus is reflected towards the earth. This is akin to what happens in an eclipse, except that Venus is small enough and far enough away that it cannot truly eclipse the Earth. |

an interesting question is to find the maximum visible brightness of venus and the distance from earth it occurs, but we will leave it for another time... |
