At a lot of places in the Café, I've seen the word "pasteboards" being used in place of "cards". So my question is, why are cards called pasteboards?

Don't know if this is true, but "Pasteboard cards were invented to prevent cheating, as the black paste (called 'gook') used to paste the boards together prevented players from seeing through the paper."

I saw thing on TV on the US Playing Card company. They showed the adhesive layer that's used, and it is a black paste..
