This item has been discussed before, but I was wondering if anyone uses one of these, and what their thoughts on it were. (Was the sizing acurate, pocket placement, holders etc)

Shane, the only draw back to purchasing this pre-made tux is that dove pockets need to be sewn in as they fit your body and production style. The tux itself will be custom made to your size which you supply when you order the outfit.
Some performers like the pockets tipped upwards while other prefer the straight line position. The exact location inside the jacket is also a personal preference. Remember, Amos is making the suit based on his preferences. While I thoroughly respect and enjoy Amos, my personal preference would be to purchase a tux locally and find a good tailor to make it "yours". You can have the pockets temporarily tacked in so you can experiment before the final decision is made. Ruffled sleeves won't be a problem for a tailor either.

I do have a tux that I currently use that was altered with larger sleves and ruffles. Unfortunately, I was unsure what to tell my seamstress when it came to making a tail pocket (I know it really shouldn't be that hard.
There is no added stiffing material in it and you can just slightly see the buldges. It is a bit older (Origionally it was a rental that I picked up fairly cheap) and was looking to update. On the site it says the pockets are already sewn in. Not too sure about that being a good idea or not, especially given my size. (5'5 130 lbs.(Skinny bugger ain't I??)) But I am assuming that Amos is very professional and can adjust these for someone my size? |

Shaner316,
You might want to consider purchasing the set of DVD's by Greg Frewin. He goes into complete detail regarding dove pockets, tail pockets, etc. It is a set of DVD's that you should glean an immense amount of information from. Just a thought. Tony Here is Greg's website: http://www.gregfrewin.com/ |

Tony Clark's "behind the seams" is also an excellent source on tux's. I bought my last tux at a men's store. All I needed to do was have a tailor add shoulder pads and widen the sleeves. The pockets were easy as I just tacked them in myself and had him sew them permanently. I don't use tails but you can get a good description of the tail pocket on General Grants vid "how to make a living stealing...Doves of course".

I used examples from Tony Clark's "Behind The Seams" to make the tux I have now. I own ALL of Tony's dove videos, as well as Andy Amyx Doves 101, and Dan Sperry's X-treme Dove Magic, and Doves in D Major.
I think Greg's videos will be my next purchase, as well as Gen. Grants (seeing how Dave has recommended it several times to others) as well as the Shimada video. Of course, all of that will unfortunately have to wait until I come back from the Kidabra Conference. (otherwise my wife will kill me for spending more money on my "stupid magic" LOL) Here is an interesting question on dove pockets: When you sew them in, do most have all 4 sides sewn? Mine are currently tacked in on 3 sides only (no bottom) and seems to work good for me I was just wondering what the preferences were and why |

Are you saying the video you have thus far do not cover this information? Just tack on the opeing and top. The rest is left so the dove can settle in. If put inside you lining, then of course the opening is sewn around that.
A good tailor can answer all you questions and they should know about the tail pocket as it was for the persons gloves and collasping hat originally. |

Shaner,
Just a quick note. My dove pockets are sewn on all 4 sides but the pockets I use are designed to be placed that way. The idea is (I believe) Greg Frewins and it works extremely well. It all comes down to this: No one sees the pockets and as long as they work for you (no bulges, etc), go with it. It is all a matter of taste and what works! Tony |

If you sew the pockets on all 4 sides, it becomes part of the jacket and has a greater tendency to show a bulge and move the jacket during the performance. Sewing across the top and part way down the opening makes the pocket more of a bag hanging inside and allows it to move independently from the jacket. However, as Tony mentioned, you must find what works for you.

Hi Dave,
I am sure you are familiar with the method Greg Frewin uses on his dove pockets. I (maybe I'm just lucky!) havent had a problem with bulges. Granted I spent an entire pinning and moving the pockets prior to sewing but finally got them right. I am curious as to what you think of "Gregs addition". Tony |

Tony, Greg's pockets aren't sewn on all 4 sides as we typically imagine. He sews the opening, top and rear but makes a secondary seam which opens up the bottom of the pocket. This reduces the bulge and also allows the pocket to move as I stated before. Without this secondary seam, the pocket would become part of the jacket. I think Greg's method works fine.
I personally sew the back, across the top and about a third of the way down the pocket opening. This leaves the pocket very free. I overlap 3 pockets on each side this way. Again, whatever works for the individual is the right thing to do.
