From my experiences with them, limited though they are, Revolutionary and Civil War reenactors are VERY picky as to historical accuracy regarding EVERYTHING that they do and you can expect that, at some point, if you perform ANY magical effect that did not exist during the period that you are working in, you WILL be called out on it, in public, and VERY loudly by some officious historical cop-wannabe.
Having done about a decade in the Society for Creative Anachronism, where things are a LOT looser, I've seen the same thing happen and it can get pretty ugly, so, my recommendation would be to stick as close to authentic props, presentation and effects as possible. The Period Propriety Police are NOT Polite! Just a word from someone who has a little direct experience in related groups and who has performed for some of the groups of which you speak. It is visited much more frequently by locals and ordinary, non-re-enacting tourists than by hardcore stitch counters. And I think they're gonna notice another guy's waistcoat has plastic buttons from Wal-Mart before they pick up on the fact that magicians in 1778 didn't use little leather "baseballs" with their cups. For me right now cost is a factor, too. Although I'd love to have a set of hand made early-style cups with the seams and soldering as Bill Palmer shows in the C&B Museum, I'm going to have to settle for something off the shelf. And for a while, I might have to try passing off aluminum as pewter. . .
