Since we're talking confucious...I've got one for you...Confucious say"Man who cooks carrots and peas in same pot, not very sanitary..." This is pretty funny and goes completely over kids heads. Hope you can use it. By the way Astrid, I thought your jokes were pretty funny.(And actually you did say it correctly)

Good topic. In my opinion, even suggestive material has no place in a kids show. Entertainers who try and rely on this to impress adults are probably doing more harm than good. I have been doing bar magic for more than 15 years. After some time away from magic, I have recently started doing a kidshow. As I examine this issue, I realize that many of the routines I have done for adults with suggestive patter, double entendre and inuendo, (who doesn't love that word?) I also perform for young audiences. However, the presentation is completely different. It is a matter of writing patter that is right for your audience. When performing kidshows, I do asides, (jokes targeted at the adults watching) but they are clean. For instance, I do my own version of David Williamson's 3 card trick. When the child fails to correctly count three cards into my hand, I might turn to an adult and say "let me guess, public school?" This always gets a chuckle from the adults. I do entertain the adults with jokes just for them.
The bottom line about this issue for me is, I might impress an adult present at a kidshow on occasion, but if have strong presentations that are geared for children, the childrens response should impress the adults enough and I will never risk offending a client or one of their friends or alienating myself with a parent. |

Hey, I like the confusious jokes.
seems that I should explain... the reason I started this post is because I dable in the busking business. I also live in salt lake city. if you've ever been here you'd know that you can't swing a dead kid without hitting a live kid. I'm not actually asking for suggestive humor to use at a kids show. I don't do kids shows. at least not on purpose. I'm asking for humor I can use on the street that will make the mormon lady with 12 kids watch my show instead of seeing a magician and thinking "Ooo! free babysitter!". |

Appreciate that Scaress is not looking to offend anyone
And on the subject - I work everything from family/kids shows to absolute Adults Only clubs - strippers etc - and it is incredibly important that we take note of our sudience and don't offend them - they don't pay their money to have us decide what is suitable in their life - we must have the commonsense to judge where they draw the line. If kids are present this is much easier because we have no right ever to inflict adult material on them. I should note I learnt this the hard way - starting off around punk when comedy was truly cut throat and we were proud to upset people - I spent years feeling I was cutting edge entertainment when I offended people and took far too long to realize I was a fool, limiting my employment options and living in an imagined glorious past. Now I concentrate on giving an audience what THEY want as opposed to what I want - and hoping to bring some joy into their lives - if they want confrontation and to be offended they can stay home and watch the news. |

Ok. you've convinced me. I won't tell offensive humor at childerens shows. I've learned my lesson. I won't even think about it. cross my heart...
well, now that that's settled, does anyone have any subtle-adult jokes? |

Another Gazzo line:
Magician: "Is that your girlfriend?" Spectator: "Yes" Magician: "Hmmmm, it's a small world." Old rope joke (from Michael Finney): Magician: "You like rope tricks?" Spectator: "Yeah" Magician: "Really...? This could be more fun than I had anticipated. Please examine the rope. Probably a lot like the stuff you have at home, right?" Audience: *Laugh* Magician: "You probably wonder how I knew THAT!" My suggestion to you is that if you want subtle adult humor, you need to check out Michael Finney's Live at Lake Tahoe Volume 2: http://www.llpub.com/zenshop/index.php?m......835d7fc8 This is a pretty good thread if you can get straight answers out of people... Have fun, ~Jonathan

I've also found that limericks (am I spelling that correctly?) can be hilarious if played correctly. Buy a limerick book and you can usually find a few that you can modify to suit your act.

For inspiration, try to watch some of the old Bullwinkle cartoons. They had great material which meant one thing for children, but something entirely different for adults.

Kerry Pollock and I are finally re releasing the routine.
The trick comes with the necessary cards that are plastic coated and should last a life time with the proper care...and a dvd covering every aspect of this routine with Kerry's script, my script, Dan Garrett's script, and other lines from working pros such as RJ Owens, Bill Palmer, Bob Escher, Doug Slater and Paul Landry....Plus two 'live in front of a real audience' versions-one of Kerry's and one of mine so they can see several different styles of presentation.... we have attacked this trick from all angles and you will receive this all for the price of $49.95. Contact me for further information. Doc
