Hi
I saw a guy dressed like a wizard and he was sitting on the street cross legged manipulating crystal-type balls He used between one and five balls He was rolling them around his hands and forearms At times the balls gave the illusion that they were floating just clear of his hands Other times they seemed to be floating at his finger tips He did not juggle the balls although in one move he held one ball in each hand and flicked them across I managed to speak to him and he told me that the balls were 'Juggling Balls' and that he had been doing his 'act' for ten years Can anybody tell me:- Is there a name for this type of performance The name of the crystal type balls The name and scource for any DVDs, tapes or books Any links or help of any sort is greatly appreciated Cheers TJ |

Hi
I'm a newbie but thanks to the Café members, I'm getting on track I'm practicing some of the moves from the clips on the internet sites and I have sent for a book from Amazon The balls I saw seemed to be slightly bigger than a tennis ball Would this be a 3inch ball? Looking at the clips on the net, I realise that the guy I saw had a 'style' This is the type of presentation I am interested in The ball remained in the one spot and he only used his hands and fore-arms in flourishy moves As he was sitting cross legged, there was little body movement Just slow, snakey movements of his hands, upper body and shoulders This gave the impression that the ball was floating in space The effect was very hypnotic Can anybody make any suggestions? The name of any good movements? Hints on practice? Names of any good books or DVDs which show this type of presentation? Also, the cost of the balls seem high? Particularly if you get them mailed Any money saving hints on balls, books or DVDs? Any cheap scources of the above in the UK? Thanks for the help so far Cheers TJ |

Can anybody make any suggestions? The move you described above sounds like the 'Butterfly'. Check for it in your ordered book and online. It's a stape move with the contact jugglers. Although the ball appears stationary, its rolling. The acrylic variety is sought for it's colors and weight. The 2 and 3" are commonly used depending on preference and hand size. Which is best for you? Well this is as easily answered with those asking what size multiplying ball set to use. You may have to try a couple of sizes to find what suits you best. The quality acrylic balls seem to sell from $30-$40 each. Do a search for 'Dube' as they provide quality juggling supplies and have some colors that'll excite you. For a cheaper source on possibly the same quality, try popular online auctions. Tons of people selling theirs in mint condition or slightly chipped. They might even be selling off the broken furniture or accent pieces they broke when the ball went flying across the room. Hehehehe. |

When you start out try to get as big of a ball as you can handle because it will roll slower and it will give you more time to react. also if you aren't positive or you don't have the money for an acrilic ball you can start out with juggling balls called stage balls. they come in all different sizes and are hevier than most jusggling balls. they are also smoot and are a cheaper way to get into this art. it takes hours and hours and sometimes years of practise but it should pay off.

If you want to study the best of the best, do what you can to find videos of Michael Moschen. He pioneered and invented most of the now-popular moves, and without question was the first to popularize the use with "crystal" balls.
In the mid 80s he was the hand-double for David Bowie in the Jim Henson movie Labyrinth, which was where I first saw him. He did two rather prominent shows on PBS, Alive From Off-Center and Michael Moschen in Motion. I had the pleasue of meeting him in 1987 and saw his show live. It was far more magical than what most magicians put on a stage before an audience! What has come to be known as "contact juggling" owes a tremendous debt to this amazing artist. |

Thanks for the reminder Frank! David Letterman had Moschen on his program. You know how David will slap most upside the head and make a mockery of so called artists. During Moschen's performance, not a sound from David. He was amazed as was the live audience and those of us watching at home.
During the performance, if you watch the old footage and listen real well, you'll hear a NBC studio cricket somewhere in the background. The guy is not good or even phenomenal, he's just downright scary as all he does with the balls is indescribable. They didn't try but it could of been a moment for breaking a world record for largest number of people holding their breath. |

Teejay - The style you are referring to is called "isolation"
Isolations are pure and pretty magic. If you MySpace you can see some a my one ball isolations. http://www.myspace.com/senseistrange some hints - I like the 2.75 inch balls don't cheap out - get the spheres you want never refer to this art as juggling skip the existing books/dvds - check out http://www.contactjuggling.org start looking at billard ball stuff now and you will already be ahead of the "jugglers" |
