Hi everyone!
Lately I have been working on using music more effectively in my shows. I am a talking performer so I don't do any routines to music, nevertheless I am sure music can really enhance my act. When I perform at corporate parties at hotels I generally do 30 mins table hopping prior to the stage show. During this time I haven't worried about music but I am beginning to think I perhaps should. In a sense it is pre-show, right? I was just wondering what other people do in regards to music while doing close up or preshow in general. Thanks Simon

Well, there are some things to consider first. Volume is important. If there is not other entertainment going on, some light music (swing, jazz, soft rock, ambient...but nothing that will put them to sleep) would be nice to keep other people alert who aren't watching at your currently performing table. But it shouldn't be distracting for those whom you are performing for. You don't want to have to raise your voice to talk.
I always have preshow music before a stage show. It gets people used to the style of music I will be using during my shows (I write all my own music). It can often create an air of mystery and fun depending on music choices and your style of act. Some simple scanning light(s) on your stage set-up can do a lot too. For some, pre show work can actually be part of the bigger show. Big shows like Cirque du Soliel shows do this very well. |

Yeah I like Jazz type stuff.
Normally when I work corporate gigs at hotels someone will introduce me. Do you have preshow music and then fade it out for your introduction and then have your opening music? Regarding introductions... Do you write up your introduction and give it to the MC? Often, the MC has taken stuff from my profile on my website and reads it all when he/she introduces me. Too long I think. What makes a good introduction? Or is the a thread that deals with introductions? Thanks

I use a headset mic and introduce myself from offstage. I play it up too. If you can get a professional recording of an intro that would be great too.
I have seen a thread about intros before. Never really read it all that much though. I find it is best to just have the MC state "and now for our entertainment" and then you start. Often an MC is not a professional and may make it sound...err...bad. The more things you can control in a show, the better. Yes, I just fade it (or have one of my people do it) and the opening music starts. |

Thanks.
Yeah, I agree. A lot of the time the MCs are not professionals. I will consider getting a professionally recorded intro done. Thanks
