Just don´t overdo it. What I really don´t like is the use and abuse of camera cuts and edits. They are doing it in every illusion. It´s kind of a sour note, because most of the illusions can be performed perfectly without them. I just wanted to add that I was in Vegas when they were filming this season of Mindfreak (they were filming the lighter vanish with the little girl and the one where he bites off someone's button and restores it), and I was pretty surprised at how many takes they had with the same spectators for the exact same trick. For example, they probably filmed the lighter vanish around five times (or more), although the button one was only filmed once. The two main problems I see with that is that not only are there a lot of editing cuts in the final effect on TV, but the real spectators end up looking like stooges because they're trying to mimmick their own earlier reactions. Both of these make his effects look pretty fake even though it looked great in person. This could be one reason it looks so incredibly bad to most magicians, even if he's really doing a genuine effect. Also, after hearing his interviews where he tends to bash other magicians, I was pleasantly surprised that he's actually really nice in person. Anyway, I'm not trying to justify everything he's done by any means, I'm just trying to share my personal observations.

Sorry, I never said to shut up and watch...I'll say it again yes it is JUST put on TV to entertain the masses. Sure they chopped way to much stuff out of the shows but don't forget some of the cutting had to do with putting a 15 to 20 min tv show with about 10 to 15 min of commercials...something had to go. Do I like it no, but that is the nature of the beast I guess. Unilogo said: They Say II: Aren't we as magicians doing the same thing using: Slights,Gimmicks,High tech,etc...To perform our miracles and have our specators say "WOW"? YES WE ARE-But it has nothing to do with methods; It's about the limits of real life performance; How this is being broken and wrongly portrayed to the home audience. Umm, I was responding to the posts that stated that and I am paraphrasing here "How Dare He Use Stooges and Other Gimmicks to Perform His Effects!" Unilogo said: Honestly-Do you want to see more Chris Angel inspired magicians in the future do TV shows OR do you want THE REAL DEAL to come out and portray our art in the way IT IS MEANT TO BE SEEN? Hmm, Do I want to see more Chris Angel inspired magicians in the future? A big NO -- nor do I want to see other magicians performing the exact same way Lance Burton does his magic or Jeff McBride does his. That to me is like being a robot. Would you not agree Unilogo? I'm not crazy sometimes about his style of magic but that is what makes this art great. Meaning everyone here and around the world that does magic performs it is a unique way. And that is the way it should be I believe. I do have 2 questions for those who are stating that this type of magic is hurting them. 1. How specifically is it hurting you? Is it because some of your spectators are asking for this type of performance? 2. What can you do to overcome the percieved problem this show poses to you? |

I could care less that he is using stooges and camera edits.
What bothers me is the less then adequate acting skills of the stooges and the extent to which the edits are noticeable. Oh that's nice, he brought his mother in a box again. Time to put out the cat, get in the box kitty... and it's gone! And the supposed audience smiles as if the performer had just offered them vanilla ice cream. When the muggles at work come asking why the "volunteer" had CA stuff on and why they seemed so comfortable and cooperative... something off. Then they tell me about camera edits. Quiz time: what brand of car does CA drive?
...to all the coins I've dropped here

This is the process most every TV show goes through. I have been at many tapings of various shows and all have to recreate reactions. I can see why some who have never been wouldn't understand but that's how it works. It doesn't mean that he didn't do the effect well or that the reaction poor.... Essie, thank you for sharing your experience with us. I wish I could have been there with you! I think Criss does a fine job and he does do a lot of magic other than the big illusion at the end of each show. Someone mentioned he doesn't do street magic just stage magic... HUH? I think last years coin in soda can was pretty effective. I loved last weeks torn and restored bill. many others as well....And as for the bashing of other Magicians... I have heard the interviews etc and don't hear any bashing... just the answering to his critics who he says aren't coming up with new ideas. To consider that bashing...one would have to have pretty thin skin. Glad he and David are bringing Magic to the forefront! |

I like the show in general. Simple concepts presented in new ways. As entertairtenment it is a great show. Now as a magic show, well, I wouldnt say as much.
I think the overuse of edits are hurting the show. The stooges are necessry sometimes. But to be in the illusions only. Please don't make the audience stooges, that's is really bad! Criss keeps saying that he doesn't use camera tricks and that his illusions are done unprerared with random people. That is what I don't like. I don't get the feeling of it but quite the contrary, and not only me, also the laypeople I have asked. |
