I store each of my packet tricks in a number 6 envelope, label the envelope, then I store them (alphabetically) in one of the many racks that I have laying around that I used to store my floppy disks in.

I have a list of 127 on my computer. I regularly use:
Color Monti Paul Harris Book Bizarre Twist with small card, I call it A Little Surprize. Bwave NFW This collection covers a 50 year span. Started with Nick Trost packet tricks he put out in the 50s. BUY HIS BOOK if you are a packet junke!! If you ar a Trost fan get his Computerized Deck using cards with the 10 to the base 2 holes on top. Not a packet trick but a relative unknown fantastic deck. I still use it as an encore item. Now try to find one!!!!!!! Merl Hamen Merl Hamen

I store my packet tricks in the plastic sleeves which can be purchased in game stores selling Magic and other type of collectable card games. Some have tin boxes with 50 plastic sleeves in them. I bought my last box of sleeves at Walmart!

I would say that the Café member with the most packet tricks would be Max Maven.

I'll have to count all my packet tricks sometime.
I don't have enough. As far as I'm concern, you can NEVER have too many packet tricks...

Greetings:
The problem is not in ho many we have, but can we remember them all? lol I have 5 boxes that I am now looking at with 75 to 90 packet tricks in each, and that does not even begin to count the ones in the drawers and file cabinets. While many are commercially released (what can I say, It's an addiction), Every time I get a book that has a packet effect in it,I immediately make up a set of the cards, put them in an envelope and file them so I can always get to the cards in case I am asked to make the cards for a special effect in print. I do not even want to start counting all of them, but there is far too many. Even with all those packet effects I still only use 11 on a regular basis. All the Best Marty |

I have too many to count, including J.K. Hartman's "Packet Magic" book which, as the title hints, consists exclusively of packet tricks.
I love them because they pack small and play extremely big. For some reason I just enjoy carrying those cheap vinyl wallets with mini miracles inside. Packet tricks also seem to give spectators the impression that since so few cards are used, no sleight of hand could possibly take place. It's nice to do a non-gaffed packet trick and be able to hand the cards out to be examined if they wish. -T.J. |

I don't have many but "Color Monte", Marcom's "Leprechauns", and Fantasio's "Kings and Aces" are top favorites.

Now you guys have got me going, too. I have to count all of my packet effects I have, but does it count if I am a hobbyist? I have hundreds. Keep in mind I have been collecting magic effects heavily for 15 years, and ThePhoenix you DO NOT need to get a life. You seem to have a great life. I do the same thing, I mark everything I have and keep everything in separate categories in my magic room in my basement, now I want to go and pluck out every packet effect and count them too! I know there is no real reason to do it, just for fun! I am actually speaking to someone about getting insurance for what I have down there, I have over $50,000 worth of stuff and I recently showed the owner of a magic shop in my town a photo of the room and whats in it, he suggested getting insurance. Tons of that stuff is packet effects. I am addicted to packet effects. You can carry a bunch on you at a time, or you can carry a deck of cards and carry a packet of gimmicked cards and take a few cards out of the deck and add the gimmick, or just do some effects without any gimmicks! Packet effects 4-life!!!

From the advertising blurb on his excellent "Focus" (packet trick) book put out under his former name of Phil Goldstein: "Since 1965, Phil Goldstein has published over 1000 ingenious tricks and routines. From this huge body of work he has chosen 60 of his best card tricks, the cream of the bountiful crop. His criteria were clarity of plot, entertainment value, and high magical content. Focus contains all 60 of these choice effects, the very best from one of today's most acclaimed creators." Its been a while since I delved into "Focus", but, at this point in time, I'm not recalling reading about any tricks that used specially printed gaffed cards. (I'm certain Café members will correct me if I am incorrect in the substance of this recollection.) Regardless, IMHO, "Focus" is an excellent book on packet tricks. Time to pull out this book from the library shelf, blow the dust off and repeat the journey through the book. Mike P.S. I would respectfully suggest that, if you have the time, you do yourself a favor and go to Café member Steven Keyl's excellent "Magic Book Report" website (i.e., the URL listing is in Steven's Café profile) and take a look at his review of "Focus". As part of this review, Steven performs a number of packet tricks from this book. On that website, you might also wish to take a look at Steven's reviews on a number of other excellent magic books (where he also performs tricks from same). IMHO, Steven's website is an obvious labor of love, a hidden magic treasure and an unrequited gift to the magic community.

I have quite a few packet from over the years, they have always been like shiny baubles to me, much as coin magic caught my eyes from a young boy.
I've had a lot of them, some good, some not so good. Most have gone into my magic draw. But I do carry a few gems now & again, like NFW, Double Back and B'wave. These are classic packet effects that I've practiced and performed for many years now and they never grow old and still greatly amaze anyone I do it for, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one that these great packet tricks are working for. Of course there are many others, like Capitulating Queens and some of the others mentioned here, but for me, the Big 3 I mentioned here have been some of the cleverest and always immediately magical. *I would also like to mention and pay homage to Dai Vernon's Twisting The Aces. it's a fine packet trick in itself and comes free with any regular deck of cards, and always plays well. I did it today for some people to great amazement…I can still hear them yelling, "Man, how in the world…!" I mentioned the word "Classic" above but this is one of the true big boys of packet tricks (Of card tricks period IMHO), where a lot of the moves and play of the cards in other effects comes from it seems. It's a great trick to pull out, and often times it's all I really need do amidst some coin work. It's not a difficult trick to do, easy to carry (just 4 regular Aces). And with these same cards, you can also do a couple of other fine 4 card packet effects, like Dr. Daley's Last Trick (Malone style), etc. Sometimes, this is all I got on me, and it's just wonderful to pull out at a bar, or at an event, a get together, or just walking about. It's an old one but still a real goody! All in all, like I said, I suppose I've collected a good bunch of packet tricks over the years (at least for a coin guy) but only do a few that have stuck with me for some reason to this day. One thing I know for sure, all of them are classics, and just plain fun to practice and do, that also make a hopefully decent-enough coin man like myself, appear to be a pretty darn good card guy as well. Good talk here.
