Do you remember the men on television dressed in lab coats and wearing stethoscopes claiming to be doctors? They were 'physicians' saying they were better than any other physician, and they proved it! They would remove a tumor from a person's abdomen without even cutting into their flesh. It was unbelievable!

When this happened, I was shocked to see the response from traditional physicians. Instead of praising these 'psychic surgeons' for exposing their healing art to everyone and bringing the wonder of medicine into everyone's home, they took to the airwaves themselves—denouncing these 'psychic surgeons' as using trickery to give the illusion they were practicing medicine.

They were furious that someone claiming to be a member of their profession was using deplorable and unethical methods to pretend to accomplish real medical miracles. They told everyone that this was unfair to the patients, that it was taking advantage of their trust in physicians that they would hold sacred the title of 'doctor' and the oath to bring people to better health, not fabricate an illusion of health.

Could you imagine if those nay saying physicians were instead real magicians like us? Can you imagine the unified outcry that would come when they saw a guy on television claiming to be the best magician and then doing things like levitating between two buildings, etc., but instead of creating and utilizing the best magical methods available, they saw this TV 'magician' was using what they considered deplorable and unethical methods to pretend to accomplish fake magical miracles?

They would tell everyone this was unfair to the viewing audience, that it was taking advantage of their trust in us as magicians that we would hold sacred the use of the camera to simply bring the magic to them, not fabricate it.

Who knows? Maybe in most professions there is a line that, if crossed, will subject the perpetrator to career-ending repercussions. Maybe in magic that line doesn't exist.
