I would like to learn how to escape from Regulation USA Standerd Police Hand Cuffs. But In order to do so I would need to obtain the hand cuffs to practice with. I allso would like to know if there is a starnderd Straight Jacket that USA Mental Wards and Jails use?
I have the Idea of having a randome officer Cuff me up in his hand cuffs and give me a basic pat down and I still excape from the Cuffs. All so is there a good book on such matters besides the starnder lock picking books? Thanks Red |

Your breaking my cardinal law. Doing this in this fashion means you have read far too many Houdini Biographies.
NO there is no standard straight jacket. And lets say there was. Do you think anyone would know what it is? SAme with cuffs. You wanna get locked up by a "random" police officer? How do you control the "pat down" as you call it? Point is many cops will take this quite seriously. (I am a former cop) Your only breaking common sense laws.

I have read half of a houdini Biographie, but I see wear you are coming from on the random police officer.
As far as the pat down I was just saying I don't want a strip search. But I have trouble beliving that there is no State wide patrole officers cuffs or that there is no countye wide starnder police cuffs. Thanks red |

As you research handcuffs you will find out that there are several different manufacturers in the USA alone. There are dozens or even hundreds more worldwide. Each manufacturer builds what they believe a cuff should be. While most modern cuffs are similar (and many are identical) there is no industry standard.
You will find that what drives any municipalities purchase of cuffs is budget. They simply buy whatever is cheapest. In my town we have officers carrying three different brands of handcuffs! Some of the cuffs are over 30 years old, still serviceable (and many have never been used), and no longer made (that is the company is no longer doing business or building cuffs)! Lucky they all work on the same pattern of key. Many state police agencies (USA) are moving away from carrying metal handcuffs entirely in favor of the plastic zip cuffs. The trooper simply has a dozen or so zip cuffs in the car. They are easy to put on, are as difficult to defeat as a metal cuff, and are disposed of after use. This is especially important if there is a blood exposure to the cuff. If you want to do a handcuff challenge act then you will have to collect and study the many dozen current designs available. Just explore Cannon’s website to see the many different cuffs available. They also carry keys to almost every make of cuff available. Shawn Ness (Xtreem here at the Café) has a way of modifying a cuff key such that it works in a number of modern cuffs (I forget but I think it works in over 40 different cuffs). Also do a search on Mark Tripp’s posts and read his thoughts on presenting an escape act. By the way, I have an acquaintance that has been collecting handcuffs for almost 50 years. His collection includes over 400 different makes and models of handcuffs. The collection is valued at over a half a million dollars (insured for that amount). I know a couple of other people that don’t have even 1/5 the number of cuffs and have invested close to 100 grand USD. It is an addiction that probably requires a 12-step program. Now what do you believe is so entertaining about escaping from a “random” police officers applied handcuffs?

The entertaing part is that The Restround I would like to work Table Magic at has a group of Regulars that are Police officers and Fire Marshles so I thought it would be a good trick to show them. Allso my naighboor hood has a small police station so I would have many oprtunitys to preform for them at town partys and Holiday porades and I assume they have and annualy Banquate I could preform it for them using hidden Pics and then explain how I did it.
I figured that it would cover the cost of the 40 doller hand cuffs. EDIT: Now that I under stand that there is not standerd hand Cuff(probley safer that way for the oficers) I guess I will just have to look closly the next time I see an oficer in my naigboor hood out of his car, because I assume?hope they wont just tell me if I ask. |

You might re-consider -- If you tell them who you are and what you do, they might cooperate. Its always good to have the cops on your side.

...the no 1 rule: NEVER EVER TAKE A RISK!
So, first check the handcuffs. Check if you can really do it! Maybe secretly. That´s the way Houdini did it. There is no point in taking a risk...and loose! Nobody will wirte about an escape artist who did really the impossible to escape from any handcuff. But they will write if you don´t manage. |

My area has a local police and security supply store where most (not all) of the local jurisdictions buy their cuffs and other equipment. It's also open to the public, and many (but not all) of their items are available for sale, including the three or four different styles of handcuffs they offer. You might check to see if there's a similar store in your area.
