Unfortunately, with regard to all of my book purchases, at least half of the books that I get through the mail have some sort of damage that could have been remedied by a little better or more careful packing. I know, I know ... it is not the condition of the book but the contents that are important. But, if it's possible, why can't I have both? In my experience, damage does not just occur from international shipping but domestic as well -- from both distributors (shops) and directly from creators. Since I am not talking about major damage here -- primarily hard cover damage -- I just accept the product and enjoy the contents -- just seems petty to do otherwise. I admit, though, that I am happier when a book arrives in undamaged condition. Frank |

I am now shipping all books from the USA internationally with Legal Size Flat Rate Priority Mail envelopes. My cost is $24 for everywhere except Canada which is $19 and that's what I charge. I seal all books in plastic to prevent moisture damage. In the USA I ship Media Mail($4) with U-line Bubble wrap mailers and Flat Rate cartons for Priority Mail. I also use bubble wrap envelopes inside the cartons to protect the books. Flat rate cartons internationally are $48 ($41 Canada) but can hold all FOUR of the books I currently sell. I just recently sent a shipment to Canada for four books so the cost per book shipping was about $10. In the last few years USPS has doubled the price of shipping internationally. There is no special book rate or Media Mail for international shipments. This is a big deal for me since a third of my sales are outside the USA. Surface mail is a poor option.

Bad news. Flat Rate Medium International Priority Mail Carton from USA to everywhere except Canada as of the new year is now $59.95!!!
At least Legal size flat rate envelopes (1 book) are still $23.95 internationally. Larry |
