It seems that everybody is crazy for #19 Elastic Bands.
Do they HAVE to be #19. Is #18 or #20 not good enough? (not sure if 18 or 20 even exist) I just bought a huge bag of them from Staples Business Depot. They were only 99 Canadian cents! Wooo! They are very easy to handle, I found that out right away.... My question is... is there any specific reason why we should use #19? Is it just general opinion these are the best? Thanks! |

They don't HAVE to be anything. Whatever you find works best for you is the way to go. Certain #19 bands have a lot more elasticity that others and will work better for certain effects...but are by no means required for others. I bought a "bag-o-rubberbands" at Office Depot, but found they are NOT as elastic as I'd like for certain effects. The Alliance Gold Crepe bands #19 are the BEST I've found. They are what comes with Pinnacle...a nifty little rubber band effect. You can use other bands for Pinnacle...but there are some tricks that the "bag-o-rubberbands" don't work nearly as well.
It's all in what you're comfortable with. Brad |

Thanks for the answer Brad.
I thought there was some sort of #19 magic code that I was missing. Neil. |

#19's have a tendency to be stretchier than other bands. They handle a little better and the thickness makes many effects prettier. Those that have tried to do Crazy Man's Handcuffs with thicker bands know what I'm talking about.
Yes, that is my real name. Yes, I am a real person. No, you probably won't agree with me.

I prefer #18 myself. 19's have too much stretch and tend to go flying off unexpectedly. They're the same thickness as #19 just a tiny bit smaller diameter.

For most men's hands the #19 size works best. To clarify, the #19 indicates the dimension of the band itself, 3 1/2" x 1/16". #18, 3" x 1/16" could also work fine, but the slightly larger dimension has obviously been a preference for some magicians that have really tried everything on the market, myself included. The Alliance Gold Crepe rubber bands are the best version because of their rubber content, strength, and stretchability. The Alliance bands can stretch easily to 27" without breaking. This kind of strength is wonderful to have when you are pulling and tugging on the bands.

This is very technical so be prepared. They fit on my wrist most comfortably.

Ive noticed no matter what size the bands are (18, 19, 20)theyre always the same thickness for that brand.
staples has #19 bands but the width seeems too much. in my opinion the illusion is more deceptive if the bands are have no width. anyone know a really good brand and place to get them? |

#19 is what fits best on the average man's hand, some like #18, and for some tricks #16 are best. They do not make a #20, so if you have exceptionally large hands perhaps rubber band magic isn't for you. HAVE FUN Al Angello

Thanks for all the great info.
Al Angello... no, I don't have exceptionally large hands... just regular I guess. So, #19 seems good. aqmagish20, thanks for the technical answer. I've usually been into gimmicks and sleights with objects (not cards)..... This whole rubber band thing is so simple it's beautiful! I've always got my pockets FULL of magic "stuff", a few rubber bands isn't going to hurt me. thanks again to everybody for all this great info! |

I came upon this post recently and ordered some #16 and #19 Alliance Pale Crepe Gold rubber bands from Office Depot. Here's my review.
After stretching out the #16 (they are quite small at 2.5" compared to 3.5" for #19) I found they work really well for CMH. When streteched between the index finger and thumb for CMH the #16 have less give. It's easier to do the critical finger switch move and bring the rubber bands back together without a tell-tale "twang" or slackening. The Alliance website (rubberband.com) says that the ultimate elongation for these is 775%. That works out to about 17" for the #16 and a hefty 24" for the #19. In practice, however, it is less because you don't want to stretch it the breaking point. Now the #19 was perfect for Vinny's "Breakaway Bracelet" and Vince Mendoza's "Found Link". That's my 2 cents. 19 upside down is 61 which is the number of witches burned in a single day in old England. Since magic is considered a component of the Devils domain and he likes an inverted cross and reversed ram horns we then jump into the relm of reversing the numbers and thus 19, which is actually the sign of the beast but was misstranslated in Revelations by the people who worked for King James who wrote the bible.

Hi Steve V
A man walks into a bar, and tells the bar tender "I'm a wig wam, I'm a tee pee, I'm a wig wam, I'm a tee pee". The bar tender looks the man in the eyes, and says "stop you're too tents". BUDDA BOOM Al Angello
