I have been investigating the idea of having Pay Pal on my site for obvious reasons to give another form of payment option to my customers who wish to order one of my products or illusions.
However, I have been hearing of horror stories about using Paypal. In fact there are several websites up that are anti-PayPal!! They talk about such things as....if someone were to buy something from your site with a stolen credit card, that you in fact could have all of your bank accounts frozen, or how sometimes money turns up missing and paypal says they are not responsible and nothing is done...etc., etc.! Can anyone shed some more light on the subject? Does anyone else use it on their site for customers?? Thank-you, P.

I have used Paypal for quite a while and I have never had a problem...outside of the high percentage they charge! If you are interested in accepting credit cards for a business check out companies that offer the service and handle everything for you. That is how I manage my accounts.

I no longer use PayPal. The reason is that I once had a problem with a product vendor. The product was never delivered and the vendor refused to give me a refund.
Normally, this can be taken care of relatively easily by contacting the credit card company. However, because PayPal was not responsible for delivering the merchandise, (only transferring the funds), getting my money back became substantially more complicated. |

I have bought and sold using Paypal for a couple of years. I also have set up a number of organizations to take PayPal on their web sites.
There is one little issue with the way their shopping cart works, and if you are selling downloadable stuff and arent real careful, folks can figure out the page that gets accessed to download and then can download for free. But that is a special case, and if you are selling hard goods that need shipped, you shouldnt have a problem. I have heard a number of complaints about PayPal over the years, and most of them are bogus resulting from people making stupid mistakes and not being mature enough to accept responsibility for their own stupidity. One complaint that I hear a lot is that their rates are too high. But if you compare the costs of a Merchant Acccount and the clearing house fees, unless you do an awful lot of card charges, PayPal may seem higher on a percentage basis, but when you figure out the savings by not having a fixed cost account, etc. Paypal is a pretty good deal. And now that eBay bought them, they certainly have the backing to continue. BroDavid

Paypal has a buyer protection service now that will give you a refund if you are unhappy with a product, but you have to pay extra to get it.

One thing to bear in mind. If an international buyer attempts to buy from your site using PayPal and it's their first PayPal purchase, you may have to wait 1 month or more to complete the transaction.
I know this from personal experience after making my first Paypal purchase from here in the UK via Don Drake's site in the US. I filled in the Paypal online form to complete the purchase and clicked the Submit button. Only then did the Paypal system let me know that I would not be able to complete my registration (and purchase) until I received an access code that would be printed on my next VISA bill. That bill was a month away. Fortunately, Don Drake is a very understanding person. However, I did feel very embarassed to buy something from him and not be able to pay for it for another month! best wishes Huw |

As a purchaser I would prefer to use magic dealers who handle credit cards direct.
My first order using Paypal resulted in them automatically making a charge to my Visa for forced membership. I objected to my Visa Company who eventually resolved this for me. When I joined they gave me a bonus discount - presumably as a means of compensating for the forced registration charge. Unfortunately it took over 25 emails to them before I could get it resolved. All enquires have to go through Paypal who respond via email. However, if you try to reply by normal email, they send back a reply saying you cannot use this medium and that they will not address your query unless you resubmit by logging onto their website. My advice to anyone contemplating purchases via Paypal - particularly if your an International customer, is beware. MikeM |

I have used paypal for a few years and I have not had any problems that cost me money.
They have a feature that allows you to give a refund and not have to pay their fees on that money. Most of the problems arise from some where other than paypal and came from the buyer's side. "I no longer use PayPal. The reason is that I once had a problem with a product vendor. The product was never delivered and the vendor refused to give me a refund." I think it is worth the expense (cost of doing biz)to get more biz. |

I really like Pay Pal, because it can be used by smaller companies where Major Credit Card Company requirements are to restrictive. (This means smaller magic dealers, illusion builders, etc.)
I hate Visa/Master Card Companies because they charge me $15 a month for non usage, and about 5.5% on every charge. They got thousands of dollars from me. It is an evil necessity from a business standpoint. With Pay Pal, you can have the funds directly drawn out of your checking account or your Visa/Mastercard account. They also charge you the percentage fee they normally would have to pay the Credit Card Company. The best thing about Pay Pal if you do use a Credit Card Account, you can easily get your money back from the Credit Card Company if you run into bad deals. If you use your checking account, it is a little more difficult to recoup bad deals, however, the other party must also have a credit card line of credit to use Pay Pal, so recouping is not impossible, if done in reasonable time frame. (Credit Cards have expiration dates) Also, you don't need to send your credit Card number over the Internet every time you do business (Minamizes chance of theft. By the way, it is a fact your chances of Credit Card theft is greater in stores sales then on Internet Sales.) I feel very comfortable with Pay Pal, and doing international ordering is so nice with it. Not always possible with Visa/Mastercard. Pay Pal has a reputation to maintain and bad deals will not be tolerated, hence their requirement of a line of Credit with them through your Credit Card. If you don't have a Credit Card, then your financial status is "questionable". (That's not meant to be negative.) Companies feel safer dealing with people with an established credit history. Pay Pal is new to people and people are a little wary of internet money exchange. Once that "preceived fear" is going, then business is great using the Internet, and Pay Pal. Internet Sales will be the major way to do business in the near future. Pay Pal will play a major part in that security for Internet sales. (It already has put companies out of business who do not have an Internet presence.)

I was able to get my money back from the credit card company, but it was far from easy. That's why I no longer use PayPal. Granted, the vendor was the problem and PayPal was NOT at fault. However, the fact that PayPal charged my account and another party was responsible for delivery seriously complicated the issue. I have nothing against PayPal based on my experience. I only avoid them because I don't feel as well protected by the credit card company as I do when I deal directly with the merchant. |

The way "chargebacks" works is quite simple. A complaint is filed in writing to the Credit Card Company. (7 day mail wait) The Credit Card Company freezes that about in the merchants account, and sends a letter of complaint (7 more days) and gives the merchant 30 days to respond on how this complaint was resolved or prove the chargeback should not have been done, again in writting with all documentation related to it. (7 days plus up to 30 days) If no response by merchant the account is minus the amount. Now the CCC evaluates the evidence and makes a decision. If more information is need then more time is allotted. A simple charge back can take up to three months, if no appeals are filed.
This process is the same whether it is though Pay Pal or Merchant's Credit Card Company. A charge back on a merchant is like a big black mark or strike. Three Strikes and your out, you loose your credit card merchant capability and are black balled from other companies. It is a pain and time comsuming especially if it is a lot of money tied up for 3 months. Again, I have a merchant account, a pay pal account, and I feel both are necessary to do business over the Internet. It took me 3 years to get the Merchant Account and less than 48 hours to get the Pay Pal Account. I feel both are equal in abilities but I feel more comfortable not sending my Credit Card everytime I want to buy something, hence Pay Pal has some good features to it. By the way, I ordered books from Phillp and the conversion ability though Pay Pal from US Dollars to English Pounds is another nice touch. Money transfered in less than 1 day.

I have to agree with Dennis on this one.
I have had zero problems using Paypal both in sending and/or receiving payments via the web. They have all the features a person could ask for, and do not charge unless the service is used. There are also other little bonuses, such as not having to worry about having a secure wbsite in order to accept credit cards. A cool shopping cart setup (which can be configured numerous ways), and conversion system for foreign currencies. As far as fraud goes, that is an issue with any system you choose to use, on or off the Internet. Remember, locks only keep an honest man honest. Just my two cents...

A few months ago I received an email that started with the following sentence:
"This e-mail is the notification of recent innovations taken by PayPal to detect inactive customers and non-functioning mailboxes." This email looked very convincing. However, being somewhat computer savvy I was sure this was a scam to get my personal information. Sure enough as I investigated this I found the email form didn’t even come from PayPal, nor did it directory its response back to them. It was a scam! Someone was trying to get personal access information so they can take over you PayPal account. I reported this problem to PayPal with detailed information of where the email came from and where the form would send its results. Paypal is fast and efficient. Its good for sales thru the net, and when I receive payment, I am able to send it out the same day.
What good is a night, when you can't break it.

But that's not to say you won't encounter problems. There are a lot of hackers out there phishing PayPal passwords. PayPal is also slick in that they get people to offer up their bank account, instead of their credit card ... there are less charge back protections against bank accounts. I'm still ticked off at them for charging $1.60 to an account I had closed, despite the fact that I directed them to use my credit card. And then I'm ticked at Bank of America who let the transaction through, even though I closed the account ... and then charged me $30 bounced check fee. And I'm even more ticked at Congress for bailing Bank of America out ... there is a reason they were in trouble: their customers left them by the thousands, anyone remember them issuing loans to illegal aliens?? And all the calls for boycotts? We wanted them to go out of business ... and Congress comes along and bails them out! <rolling eyes> But even so ... I still use PayPal. I consider it more secure to pay via PayPal than to give someone I don't know my credit card number, especially online where credit cards numbers get saved on insecure harddrives. It my opinion that merchants that accept PayPal do more business online. -JoeJoe
