I need some suggestions on what type of headclip style wireless microphone to buy. My main complaint is that they distract from the performers face. Does anyone know what brand of microphone that Gerry McCambridge is using? He's pictured in the latest Magic Magazine. His is a very thin one.

Countryman E6 in the smallest, but is very fragile compared to others.

Audio-Technica AT898cW is almost as small, and I THINK it's less fragile than the Countryman.

DPA 4065 (or 4066, or 4067) is a bit larger, but is the most robust, and sounds the best.

All of them can be wired to work with most wireless systems.

All have better "gain-before-feedback" than comparable lav mics. All have worse gain-before-feedback than full-size headset mics.

DPA sound the best... they might be a little larger, but I don't really think that they are noticeable at all.... if you're wearing it correctly it should disappear once you get 10' away.

Does the DPA have that huge 1" golf ball hanging off the front? I thought it was supposed to have a very small wind protector.?

No 1" golf ball: The DPA sock is pretty small. If any tiny headset is omni-directional (which most tiny headsets are), then a foam windsock is only necessary outdoors, because omni's are not very susceptible to wind noise.

As most here know, we 100% recommend the DPA. We use it both indoors and out. We do not use the windsock, have never had a need for it thus far.

As Dan and Paul mentioned, it has the best sound. Structure wise it is well-built and moves far less than a Countryman, all while using no tape. Since it goes over both ears, it does not 'pivot' on one ear like the Countryman.

I don't think so...It looked like it only went over one ear...also, they had them taped, which is completely unnecessary for the DPA.

Although other mics are used, the Countryman and the DPA certainly are the most common in broadcast. The easiest "tell" (between the two) is that Countryman's boom arm comes from ABOVE the ear (sometimes appearing to come from INSIDE the ear), while the DPA's boom arm comes from BELOW the ear.

The DPA is an expensive little rascal - and that's without a transmitter.

It might be expensive but sure does sound good.

Many times, they are assuming that you already have a transmitter and are only needing the mic. DPAs can be built with whatever type of connection you need to the transmitter. i.e. If you have a Shure beltpack, then you just specify that when ordering and it will come with a Shure connection wired to it.
