Keep balloons in a cool place away from sunlight. I have stored them in a freezer before, but now only have room to store them in my cold cellar.

In a freezer???
I've heard that keeping them in a cool (i.e. not extreme temperatures, hot OR cold) and out of direct sunlight is a good way to go. Don't keep them in your car on a hot day for example. I try to store my balloons in 3 different places with equal amounts in each place. Then if one set gets ruined, I still have 2 more to work with. It might be a little extreme, but you don't insure your house for fun . Cheers, Ali

Haven't you heard about keeping rubber bands in a freezer to make them last longer? The cold prevents biodegrading.

Ahh, Cheers Bill,
I'll have to try that! Do you put them in in the bag they come in? Also, what about them freezing and cracking etc? Cheers, Ali

The won't crack. They wont really get hard, just a little stiffer, but will warm up in seconds as you blow them up. Although, if you are blowing up by mouth, you will have to let them warm up a little longer than if you are using a pump.
I keep them in the bags they come in. When I buy balloons, I buy them in bulk (no less than 1000 balloons at a time), so I need to store them because I may no use them all within a month. It depends on what I am doing a what gigs... |

Magic man,
First, I'd say adventure out into the world. You should be able to work out how to make a dog (really simple). Then I'd say go to http://www.tmeyers.com Lots of people are saying that it is very good. I have not bought any products from him but everyone is saying that the site is superb so that has to count for something. Ali

You can find some good twisting instructions in the monthly columns. As for storage, do not leave them in your car. Sunlight and heat are the worst thing for them. Balloons are organic and bio-degradable. Sunlight, heat, and air all speed up the death of your balloons (especially the first two). Many people use a cooler as their balloon bag or store their extra balloons in an ice chest during summer months. At home, a freezer is good for long term storage (ie. you want to stock up a few years worth of a dicontinued product). But for normal use, just keep them in a cool, dry, dark place. keeping them in plastic containers or ziplock bags will help as well. Under these conditions a bag should remain usable for several years.

It takes a special skill to mouth blow a balloon, and you must blow from the diaphragm (in your abdomen ), not the lungs. Think about blowing out your candles... one candle, you can blow from the lungs, but when you have a LOT of candles, like Buster recently had, you have to really let loose from the depths to get them all. . . Unless you want to look like Dizzy Gillespie in his later years, keep your cheeks in. OH, and DON'T smoke!! Oh, not only does the freezer work well for storing new balloons, but it will also keep your creations fresh, too. You can see Buster Balloon's (Don Caldwell's) research on balloon care in last October's column on BHQ: http://www.balloonhq.com/column/caldwell/oct05/
