I'm pretty new to escapes outside of performing a packing crate escape and thumbcuffs. I'm thinking of purchasing my first straight jacket and really like the Bonza Straight Jacket at Cannons. I think what catches my eyes the most is the vintage/Houdini-like look of the jacket itself. Has anyone had epxerience with this jacket and the quality of it? I'd love to hear all the pros and cons.
Thank you! Here's a link: http://www.cannonsgreatescapes.com/spectacular_2.html -Bryan Gilles |

I think most products at cannon's are really good, but I really don't like this type of jacket, I think the leather parts looks awfull, to me it looks more like a magic prop than a real straitjacket (look at the posey, now THIS is a jacket)

Hi Bryan,
I think it all depends on what you're trying to do. If the jacket is going to undergo unlimited inspection, then I'd steer clear of a it. If you have an assistant putting you in, and no audience participation, then go with whatever is most comfortable for you. There is no particular reason to for a gimmicked jacket; those who do often end up replacing it with a normal one later on. As Xargos said, anything on the Cannons site is likely to be high quality, so that shouldn't be an issue. PM me if you want to discuss this in any more detail. Thanks, James. |

I have the Bonza jacket, and I bought that one because I wanted the "slip an arm out without uncrossing the arms first" feature. It works incredibly well. I have put this thing through a ton of abuse, and would highly recommend it if that's the look you like.

As I mentioned before, I love the "vintage" look of this jacket. I don't want to use an ungimmicked jacket as this will strictly be used for comedy entertainment in my parlor act. Is this a bad choice if I ever chose to perform an suspended straight jacket escape?

Hi Bryan,
No, it's not a bad choice. I will PM you regard the USD SJ Escape. Thanks, James. |

The Bonza jacket is great for the USD- I performed from this past May all the way through June, 3 times per day (4 on weekends) to promote my show at a tourist destination. It saw a ton of use and although I did get a little "into" the acting at one point and caused a small tear in the neck area, it was easily sewn back and I think it actually adds to the "grungy authentic" look of the jacket.

USD? I'm also interested in a straight jacket and trying to decide on gimmicked or ungimmicked.I'm heading toward gimmicked as I want to ensure I get out of it and with minimum damage to my person.I also intend to play up the comedy aspect of the routine.

Well, the jacket came in a couple days ago! It fits perfectly and is beautifully constructed. I've had it put on and escaped several times! My biggest complaint (if any) is the gimmick. It's a little long, so I will probably cut it down by a few inches and re-rivet the leather. The gimmick also contains a small aluminum stick, I will probably replace that with a small metal ring for easier holding. Other than that, I'm really happy with the product and look forward to years of use with it!
Thanks to all for the comments! -Bryan Gilles |

Bryan,
Is the problem that the arm strap is so long that the last hole is easily reached by the person strapping you in? Don't cut the gimmick down- I too had that problem and it was easily solved by making more holes in the arm strap (I used a drill as opposed to a punch). Good luck! |
