Hey all! I recently discovered this part of the board. Hopefully, this hasn't been done before (it's kind of hard to search for these things!).
10 110 11110 31110 1321110 11131221110 What's the next number?

Each time a "next number" question comes up, I can't resist and say, "Any number you want," since you can (easily) build a polynomial that will pass through all the pints you menationed and the new number X you state.
Pettynessly (if there is a word like this), N. |

That is true, I suppose.
Btw, if "pettynessly" was a word, it would be spelled "pettinessly." The prize of a donut and coffee (or champagne, if that's your thing) to anyone who gives me the correct number....and not a variable!

How about:
3113112221110 or can also be 31131122310 Nir |

You are correct on the first one!
It's the "look and say" sequence. I used "10" as the first number for the benefit of those Googlers. 10 (ten) 110 (one ten) 11110 (one one and one ten) 31110 (three ones and one ten) etc. Each row describes the previous row. Here's your donut and coffee - careful, it's hot! There's cream and sugar on the counter. :hotcoffee:

To avoid ambiguity you should use only single digit numbers.

Why's that? "Look and say" sequences can start with ANY number. Is "10" not a number? Besides, I specifically choose "10" because the sequence wasn't Googlable.
You certainly didn't seem to have a problem with it!

Michael,
All I say is that a "10" (ten) can be interpreted for the next line as 1110 (one "one" one "zero") or a 110 (one "ten"). That is not unique. Nir |

Also, you could read 11110 as one eleven and ten which puts you in a loop.

Obviously, you guys have never worked with "look and say" sequences before. I'm glad I could bring something new to the table!
There are basically two rules to follow - One: The start number, whether it's 7 or 6.394 or 10, will always stay constant throughout the sequence. It can't be broken up, or interpreted, as anything other than itself. Two: You can't start in the middle of a sequence. If you say "10" is "one zero," then zero would have to be the start number. However, zero wasn't given as the start number. So, a "10" is just a "10." Best
