Voting is over; but, I am adding one for ROY BENSON BY STARLIGHT. At any odd hour, open the book to any odd page, and instantly discover new wrinkles on all sorts of magic from a new visual for the Misers Dream, to rethinking the venerable Die Box, ( including an interesting bit on Mel Babcock
Die Boxes). I've gotten so much pleasure from the sheer visual beauty of the book as well. But, the more you dip into it, the more it stimulates you to rethink the obvious in performance, from multiplying balls to the way you operate on stage or parlour -- who would think you could have a successful act communicating to the audience while lying on the floor, and have them scream with laughter?-- Its a book to visit with for many years, returning delighted with new thoughts from old. |

It's always worth looking at the margin the winner has actually won by.
In this case, Power Plays dominated the competition with 10 more votes than the second place finisher. To put it into perspective, the 4th place finisher didn't get 10 votes in total. I read a Mike Powers post somewhere where he says that he doesn't have a whole lot of these books left, and that he has no plans for a second edition...........I ordered mine as soon as I read his post, and saw the margin Power Plays was winning this poll by! |

It’s an understatement to say that I am greatly honored that Power Plays has been chosen book of the year on Magic Café. I have found many of the books on the list to be excellent. And to be picked the winner in a tough field like that has been most gratifying.
I haven’t picked up Roy Benson by Starlight yet. But having read the comments, it appears that it would likely have been the winner had it been more widely distributed. Its $150 price tag has kept it out of the hands of many. This will be my first purchase of 2007. Power Plays is not yet in short supply at this point. I have a number of copies here and the distributor still has stock for dealers. I believe that I mentioned in a different post that Top Secret Stuff had sold out in a year and being OOP for 16 years has made it somewhat valuable. I suggested that everyone should buy two copies of Power Plays – one to keep and the other to sell down the way when it’s OOP. I was just kidding. However I don’t plan on a reprint so feel free to buy as many as you like! Best wishes to all Café members for a fantastic 2007. I wonder what great books await us this year. Peace, Mike

I just noticed that 'voting' for best book of 2006 began in July (!?!?!). Shouldn't voting of this kind have started in January 2007, in order to accomodate all of the books that were published . . . oh, I don't know . . . the second HALF of the year?
(Nothing against Power Plays, which I did enjoy, but come on!) |
