The Soapy Smith Night party at the Magic Castle was a big success again this year.
Held on the night Soapy was killed, July 8, the party celebrates the life of one of Dai Vernon's favorite gamblers, the notorious Soapy Smith. The proceeds from the party go to the Vernon Fund which helps magicians in serious financial emergencies. We had "fun casino" with several Faro tables operating around the Castle. Chef Anton, two-time National Trick-Shot Champion at Pool, did his trick-shot show which features a combination of magic and trick shots. Professor Dave Bourne, the piano player from Deadwood's Gem Saloon, provided the saloon piano music and accompanied the lovely Western Songbird Brandy LaPlante in her song and dance. Zigee the Good Gypsy and Bravo the Wonder Dog also performed. Bravo can count objects, add, subtract, and do complicated arithmetic problems. He also is very good as a bunco squad dog--he busted Anton at Fast and Loose. Rob Zabrecky, a professional auctioneer, ran the auction which included some great magic collectables from the Blackstones and from Mark Wilson and Nani Darnell, rare out-of-print books about Soapy Smith, a set of the S4S Colorado Silver Shells and our new "Lucky Bill" Thornton Shells made of solid brass, a naked lady made of soap, a "lucky chip" from Soapy's wooden grave marker encased in a beautiful shadow box, and many other wonderful things. Jeff Smith, the great grandson of Soapy gave a talk and led the traditional "toast to Soapy's ghost." People came dressed to the nines in 1890's costumes, and great prizes were given to the sexiest, most authentic, and funniest costumes. Lots of photos and videos of the festivities are available at the Scoundrels Photos site at http://www.scoundrelsphotos.com Look under Soapy Smith Night 2006. Next year's July 8th bash will be even bigger. Plan to attend. |

Right got it now... Whits post is from last year. I got a bit confussed by thinking Whit had just posted that and was talking about yesterday June 8th.
Ok next month July 8th thanks. Cool!
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.
