Cody,
First to be fair, I must admit that I have never used the Tillford product. I do use three of the Chalet units in my two hour stage show. Two of the three are on Eureka bases the third is one a rolling stand. The model you show does appear to have more metal. After using mine since the 70s, I don't see any advantages to that. The first place for paint to chip is on metal. I do like the idea of a good case. The Chalets pack flat but there is no case. What I don't like, and I hope that I am wrong, is that this model ends with the sides sticking out parallel to the base (resting on the table top) rather than falling to the sides of the box base. On the table in the photo, it simply does not allow for the sides to fall that far. Secondly, I would not want to add the size of the table to the box for space or appearance. Lucy and I spin the boxes during the presentations. The table top arrangement in the photo would be a poor visual for that presentation. (Our bases don't move once on stage.) Given a choice, I would buy three more Chalet units first. I have no idea about the price differences. But it would not matter. Chalet may actually be cheaper. I have put up to six doves in the Chalet at a time. That is not a significant difference. (That was poor showmanship at a younger age.) Delivery time is another factor. I've never experienced slow deliveries from Chalet. Others apparently have. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Is George still making the Chalet Doves to Rabbit?

I have owned both. Rich Hill's is very well made, and he is a great and honest guy to deal with. I love everything Chalet makes, you will not find finer magic for the person doing shows. I think George is making them, and in talking with him, things are getting much better as far as getting props built. If you can't get the Chalet in the time frame you need, then you will not be sorry with the Rich Hill version. Hope this helps.

Thanks for everyone's time in responding. I really do appreciate it!
I actually own a Chalet Doves To Rabbit, but the mechanism is not quick enough for some reason. When I pull the top off, you can actually see where the doves go, if you know what I mean. So I have had to compensate, basically I have to fist turn the Chalet around to hide the birds, then pull the mechanism to vanish the birds, then pull the top off, and to me it's just not as visual. Is the Rich Hill version quick enough to do without turing it around? I love my Chalet, it's just not very quick to get the job done. Cody S. Fisher

Cody,
Something sounds wrong. Perhaps you have a broken spring and are relying on gravity. I've never had that problem. I'd give George a shot at fixing it. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I got it but not from that dealer. Is it the same effect and the secrets are the same? It's from Tora Magic, but I have some trouble when the bird gets away sometimes, the feathers stick out.

Can anyone tell me where I can find the plans for doves to rabbit? (On the web through a magic dealer, wherever) I like to tinker on wood working in my (very little) free time. Thanks for all the help! (IF I POSTED THIS IN THE WRONG SECTION I WILL MOVE IT THANKS)

What ever you do. Do NOT!! buy the Dave Powell version. It has injured two of my doves. After returning it to him. He still didn't fix the problem. I finally sold it saying it needed repairs.

I have owne two Chalet versions and they were great. The first was the older version. The second was the version he made with the laminate top, the spring loaded gimmick, and the elastic to pull the birds back into their "secret spot."
I'll say what everyone has said about Rich Hill... great guy and he builds beautiful props. But personally I like the visual of the sides falling completely down and also think that Chalet has a thinner appearing base. Chalet also used to make a plexi-glass version of the Dove to Rabbit.... he may still offer it. Cris |

Chalet Doves to Rabbit back in the 1980's had a flash pot that produced a cloud of smoke, built in it as I remember. It was a smaller box trick back then. The doves were on a perch supported by string. This model had bars in the front that you could see the birds as they transformed.
