I am mainly into cards and coins, because well, I can't really explain. There is just something about them, the flourishes and the infinite possibilities.
I am really into knuckle busting, intensely technical material. Do you think there is any sponge work that would excite me, i.e. highly technical knuckle busting eye candy??

From a magician's perspective, sponge balls and sponge rabbits would probably not fall into the category of knuckle busting and intensely technical material. Although, a good retention vanish is something to be greatly admired from a technical standpoint.
From a spectator's perspective, sponge balls and sponge rabbits are hard to beat. There are very few other effects that have a bigger impact or leave a longer lasting impression on a spectator. |

The best part about sponge things is that you can play it a couple of ways.
You can do a routine where everything happens in your hands and the balls jump back and forth and such. But you can also do the same routine or basically the same where the magic happens in the spectator's hands. That's powerful.

Jay, if knuckle busting is your thing, forget sponge balls, go into billiard balls!

Spongeballs are certainly not a technical area of magic, but it is definitely a trick that laypeople just absolutely love.
Plus now that they are available in just about every color of the rainbow, the patter possibilities are endless! Carl |

If you only get excited by knuckle-busting stuff, only perform for magicians. However, if you get excited by the audience reaction, then performing for laymen is acceptable. Sponge work is all about the audience reaction.

This link will take you to Ken Scott's page.

I agree with Ray. If you only like knucklebusting, just perform for magicians at the club. If you want to blow laypeople away, learn to think like a layperson. Darwin Ortiz is one of the most accomplished practitioners of card magic in the world. When he creates an effect he thinks of the effect, then the method. If a second deal is the best way to accomplish this, he uses it. If a simple glide accomplishes it, he does that. He doesn't worry about how hard the method is, only the result in the spectators eyes. That's good magic.

How to get someone excited about sponge balls...
Just think of their soft curves and pouty red looks, so squeezable, so mysterious... oooh baby.
Thought: Why does man kill? He kills for food. And not only food: frequently there must be a beverage.
