Hi all. I am returning to the magic scene after a short spell, or should I say spill. I went down on a motorcycle (hit and run) and literally disappeared from the magic scene a few years ago. I have recently decided to re-activate my castle membership and resume my career. I have been reading posts here and on the genii forum and I think it fantastic to see how many pros and amateurs and connecting with the hobbiests and fans who share their thoughts, ideas and love of magic.
Kudos to the staff for providing this great opportunity! |

It's times like this I wish I'd listened to what my Grandad used to say...

Thanks, all. Tricks like google and cell phone magic are more recent, but no, I don't think magic has changed. As long as the laws of nature/physics don't change, magic probably wont either.
On the other hand, with new generations come new attitudes and approaches to solving the same problems that magicians have always faced in creating magic. Good magic is a blend of art and science. On the artistic side, performance styles certainly change with the times. There seems to be a lot of people who will say that the recent past masters produced magic at a level that is just not seen today. I am not sure that is true. There are some great artists out there today that I think are every bit is good. What do you think? Bruce |

Well I am not in the magic-world too long. I have watched magic quite a time, but never took the oppertunity to do something with it, until recently. So for me it's quite hard to compare old and new. But I think every generation looks back at the history and respects the past. That is very good, because there is so much to learn from the past. What I really like about the magic community is their respect for the past.
Magic is evolving all the time, some new developments are good, some are less. Well just like the human evolutionary development magic develops the same way I think. All kinds of small steps are taken, and the best (selection) will make it till the next generation. So if you look in current time it might be a bit confusing, but luckily we have the build up routines from the past to fall back on, and give us a steady base for new possibilities. So magic evolves in time. To awnser your question, I think it's very hard to see which little or maybe large steps might take us to a new level of magic right now, so it's hard to see which magician will be remembered in the future. But I think we all have to respect the magicians that try to combine old ideas to create some new effect, or that create a new idea on it's own. |

Welcome to the Café! Glad to see you safe and sound. I ride motorcycles as well, so I can sympathize with your absence.

Thanks gaffman.
Jeff, are you living in the bay area? I went to San Leandro High School in the late 70's. I got my start performing magic in SF and the bay area. I also sold peanuts for the oakland A's. |

Bruce! Hehehe, that's great! I can just picture you out there, peanuts in hand, watching the fabulous A's back in the day.
I was born and raised here....San Jose to be exact. My folks now reside in Gilroy, my inlaws live in Morgan Hill, and I am up in the central valley (Tracy, CA.) Glad to see you posting here!

Yes, those were the days for the Oakland A's. Sal Bando, Vida Blue, Campy Campinaras... Definitely a championship team, three years in a row. I took a look at your site. Keep up the good work.
