Mb217, Thanks for the video link. That is definitly a nice presentation of NFW. Which count is being used there. The one I have been practicing is with the 3rd joker and then hand it off to the spectator before entering into the main phase.

What I have found for me is that the stronget presentation is to start off with a laugh. I say, "I've got 4 face-up jokers here and like magic I'll turn the first one over... BAM!" Do your count to show the first one has turned over.
This always elicits a laugh because they're thinking "that was already turned over to begin with". Which makes the next two transformations more startling because obviously they weren't already turned over. I originally did this because I couldn't find a comfortable handling for showing all 4 jokers. After I found a comfortable method to show all 4 jokers I started doing it that way only to find that both magically and for entertainment value my original patter played BETTER than doing the hamman-style count. Ever since then I've switched back to the original patter and haven't looked back.

NFW is a fantastic trick, but it requires work in order to give it any semblance of meaningful presentation. Why do you start with four jokers? Why do the cards turn over one by one? Why do the jokers turn into aces? Unless your presentation can provide answers to these questions, all you are left with is an interesting puzzle.
As for the false display, a simple "two as four" count will easily do the job. But from what I just said, I hope you'll see that the count is the least of your problems in elevating this effect from a puzzle to a real piece of magical entertainment. Kent

Thank you Kent, you did a much better job of making a point than I did. That is really why I don't like it, I have seen it done, and done, and done, and...but it is done for no reason.

Are the cards examinable by the spectators at the end?

Learn the Hamman count.. If it looks questionable that means more practice. Please don't ever utilize a presentation just because it was ok with someone else. Strive to be the best! Not someone who thinks, ah it was ok for penguin to utilize it in their demo so it must be ok for me.

How about this idea? Display about 20 jokers, stating that you keep them together as they are troublesome...Say,that you have narrowed the main trouble makers down to these 4 guys, and pocket the remainder...
I won't go into specifics on the detail of this concept as anyone owning NFW should see how this can be done, but it works with my patter... Thanks for reading,Simon |

What Penguin does is the 2 for 4 Count from an Elmsley Count grip. I think the 2 for 4 Count from a Biddle Grip is better, and that's what I use. It takes some work to get the count looking good, but it's worth it! You could also skip the count. I don't think it's a big deal!

I use the advertising card that comes with the Bicycle cards. I explain that I collect Jokers as I do a Hamman Count. The advertising card is third from the top. When I get to it I pause a half beat and say, " well this isn't really a Joker" then complete the Count. Push up the advertising card from it third position and discard it. "Well just use the these four" and finsh the trick.
My 2 cents. |

I'd like to go out on a limb here and say that I think a lot of people are missing a big point:
Okay, sure, the Hamman count doesn't look entirely convincing in this case. Heck, I just pseudo-swing cut the packet a few times and go into it. POINT: If you don't stress over it, relax, and handle your move of choice NATURALLY, it doesn't matter what the move is or (for the most part) how it's handled. |

I just use a *2 for 4 with 4 count* to display the four Jokers. (The 2 for 4 count and its variation using 4 cards is taught in the card college series. I believe in Vol.2 and is used in the effect "The Royal Acrobats" from the same book).
The only thing that makes this count tough with this partiular effect is the "Stuff" one one of the cards. It takes a bit of practice to learn to do it without any sticking. But its still one of the most convincing ways to show the 4 jokers. V.

Redeagle, that video is the way I learned to do it at first as I loved the handling so much...No nonsense and so well done...just smooth, smooth, smooth. Along these lines, I also like Bill Malone's handling of Dr. Daley's Last Trick and do it just that way to this day as well...IMHO, it's just perfect. That's why I posted the NFW video here. Sometimes you just happen upon that kind of perfection and there's no need to re-invent the wheel, just adapt and conquer.
Of course I came to understand how to do these effects in different manners but it's good that with NFW, you don't even really have to count the jokers at all to still effectively do the trick. The simple implication of stating "4 jokers" is strong enough to take you through it, no questions asked, only amazement to specs. The count is just a bonus and a sorta "get ready" to do the effect to me. It's easiest to start the count with the cards face up. Face down takes a bit more effort but easy enough if you aim to learn how. And remember, this is a coin guy saying this. NFW is one of the few card tricks I practice pretty regularly with dummy cards as to the moves. It's a great basic tutelage in some good card manipulations to me. And the movement of your hands and cards (also in The Daley Trick as well) makes it look a lot like (if you got it down good), like you actually know what you're doing out there. Again NFW is just a perfect little trick, no matter how you do it and or gitter done. Probably takes less than a minute to perform but whoever you show it to will remember it forever, guaranteed! Oh and I typically carry 3-4 card tricks with me, and usually get around to doing maybe 2...Those 2 are usually NFW which leads into me doing Daley's Last Trick with the 4 aces (seemingly) from the finish of NFW. Since The Daley Trick is done with regular cards, you sorta finish 2 effects clean as a whistle. I tellya, these babies make a coin man look like a pretty good card man as well.
