How do you describe your act when a potential client asks?
Are you vague, or do you go into details. Or some where in between?

Somewhere in between, although I do get quite detailed about parts of my show. I want them to hear the excitement in my voice as I describe the reactions I get. (That may not sound quite right but it's not as arrogant as it seems!)

I am lucky. All the work I book is straight from people seeing me work.
The only "clients" I work with are agents. They already KNOW what it is I do. They do all the describing for me. Far less trouble.

I have discovered even past clients and word of mouth clients still want your act described to them. Especially if you offer different types of performances.
My management describes bits and pieces of my act as well as my style and image.... Back in the day when I sold my own act, YES BE EXCITED in your voice...... and refer to past performance and clients….. For example… (kinda made up) Oh last week at the xxxx corporate party, I was performing xxxxx this women was so excited and she was floored lots of people came over to see what was going on,,,, I drew large crowds, and I ended up staying an additional 15 minutes because I was even having fun with the guests… See the above reflects a few things.. 1. Past clients, 2. Enjoyment 3. Attention getter 4. You were even having fun. Therefore you must be entertaining. 5. You stood a few extra minutes…. So they might have to BUY more time… wink… Get the concept???? Best of luck…

I agree with the above, but if you are talking about significant money I'd consider having a presentation dvd made of your act. This is not simply your act recorded , but an edited piece that's more like a movie coming attraction that designed to pitch your act. Show the high points, audience reaction etc. have a good voiceover.
I also would have a color print piece that show parts of the act. I'd also consider using a professional copywriter. In addition to your enthusiastic pitch. the client will be able to see you aren't just blowing smoke. In addition. should the client need to consult with others they'll have the benefit of your pitch too. |

Well Noel did bring it up another point that was not asked... But I do agree that you have to back it up with nice print material and video....
I know a few awesome places for this stuff and does not cost as much....... I have my stuff print with this company all the time..... GREAT work ....................PVT me if anyone wants to know print shops and dvd dup places... cheers

Truthfully to duplicate your own DVD today is NOT that expensive.
Printing is not expensive at all. To have a great pitch with no materials to back it up is simply not going to work. Never has to any real extent anyhow. I thought having promo done was self explanitory. Kind of like the concept that you have to have a decent act to sell in the first place. I didn't mention it, but it is the first step really.

I often will describe one routine from the show, with enthusiasm. I am prepared to do this when selling on the phone.
It helps them to imagine using your show, and makes them more inclined to hire you. In a way, it's like a demonstration of your services over the phone. But you are not doing a trick to/with them over the phone, but asking them to imagine how they will feel about you entertaining their guests. Get their emotions involved, help them to see you can deliver what they want. - Donald P.S. I also have a promo video, but you have their attention here and now, and by doing this, you can help them to make an IMMEDIATE positive buying decision.

The first thing I say is, tell me what kind of event you are planing. Ahaha you have contacted the right fellow, I can give you bla bla bla bla to make your event memorable for all of your guests. The point is I don't tell them anything until I know what they are looking for.
