Hi Simon,
Add me to the list of quick learners on your stack. It took me about 1 1/2 hours to memorize the positions. Now I just need to practice recalling quickly and order some of your books. Which would you recommend as a first/with great effects? Thanks, Drew

I won't pretend to speak for Simon, but I can speak from my own experience with Memorized deck work. Start with simple effects.
Have someone freely select a card from the spread. As the person looks at the card, close the spread and transpose the two halves of the deck. Glimpse the bottom card. You should immediately know the selected card. Let the spectator return the card to the deck and shuffle it. Proceed to do any effect that reveals the selected card. Do simple things that will build your confidence. As your confidence builds, you can try many more daring effects with the memorized deck. As a starter, Simon has a nice opener using a memorized deck in Try the Impossible. It's a quick effect, and it only requires a moderate skill level.

I'm afraid I wouldn't agree with Barry's starting point. It's a waste of a memorized deck merely to use it to know the next card in the stack; you can accomplish that with a Si Stebbins or Eight Kings (or many other stacks) and no memory is needed. It would be also a waste to shuffle the deck, losing its benefits after such a simple trick.
But Barry is right, that Try the Impossible contains two of my favorite mem-deck effects, that are quick and maintain the stack. The Invisible Card is the easier of the two, and I often teach that for those starting with a mem-deck, because the math and skill is simple, so it helps build confidence. Two Beginnings is the other, and although a bit more demanding, it's very strong. Both of those effects are performed and explained on Volume 3 of my DVDs, and honestly I'd say that volume is the single best place to get an overview on my memorized deck magic, from easy simple beginner information all the way to the more difficult. It's set up so that each effect illustrates another basic principle. If you check out the description on my website (and also on the L&L thread that I answered here) you'll get more info. My material on mem-deck is spread out among all my books, and there are favorites in all of them. I think it's best to start with Bound to Please, but the most sophisticated stuff is probably in Simply Simon. Because I've written an awful lot on the memorized deck (over a span of 30 years!), I have a "roadmap" on my website that can guide you. I think Simon mentioned this source earlier, but Marlo's article in Ibidem No. 8 (if you have it) is a great place to start using a mem'd deck.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info everyone. I'll plan on collecting the entire library over time, starting with the volume 3 dvd. It sounds like this should give me a good starting point. I'm convinced that these methods should be in every card man's arsenal. Thanks Simon for the chance to hear your thoughts and I hope you'll keep in touch with the forum from time to time.
Thanks again. Drew
