Hi...
I'm thinking of offering 10% for those who, after hiring me for their bday party, provide leads that RESULT in additional bookings. I will simply ask who (if anyone) referred them... and then send that person 10% (approx $10). Requires a l'il add'l paperwork/tracking... but worth it, I believe. Any thoughts about this?? Thanks! -Doug Salt Lake City "Helping to bring more magic into the world... one smile at a time." |

Hi Doug -
Welcome! I am responding under the assumption that you have a good show, and that your customers are happy with your services and the value you deliver. Although some people will tell you not to pay for, or not to reward referrals, it is a perfectly acceptable business practice. And good business sense. At the very least, send out a thank you card, or make a thank you phone call. Encourage the behaviour you want your customers to do. There are lots of business / marketing courses, books, and other information out there that discuss the practice of rewarding referrals. This is not a new concept, but good for you for discovering it for yourself. Rewards can be cash, gift cards, lottery tickets, gifts, etc. BTW, you can do it without telling the customers up front you will be doing it, or you can tell them that you have the practice of rewarding referrals. - Donald P.S. Hot tip! Don't just reward, or thank for, referrals that result in shows, but even those that don't. Encourage the behavior you like, and that is the behavior of customers telling others.

Whowabout you not give them cash but give them a discount off their next show with you
I think a $10 in the psot is OK but not worth going to the bank for to post the cheque---but a 10% discount off their next show with a thank you card sounds bigger and better |

I do something along this line for my library summer reading shows. I discount $50.00 from my show fee for each additional library show that a librarian books for me in their area either the day before, the day of or the day after their show. I have several libraries that don't pay a cent for their shows...but my week is fully booked with full fee shows with little to no effort on my part. The income from these multiple "no travel" shows more than covers the discount fees.
I used to include a pad of sequentially numbered referral cards in my birthday party "Mommy Gift Pack." These cards offered a 10% discount off the next party for each referral. The scheduling mother had to provide the sequential number to earn the discount for the referring mother. Ten referrals and the referring mother's next party was free. Very few mothers actually used the cards so the idea fell out of practice. The sequential numbers helped me keep track of the referral source. It's a good idea, Doug. Skip

I Offer 10% discount to customers who mention my ad in various papers. This way I can Keep track of what is working and what is not Then I know where to advertise. I Haven't done it before but I see No reason why you couldn't offer the same to a past client that passes your name along.

Doug,
I always offer a discount to clients who refer other clients. I provide information about the referral discount in a package I send to the clients after their shows are complete. I also have a brief page on my website regarding my client referral program. I book enough shows this way to make it worth my time. I give each discount certificate a unique number and then track them using a simple spreadsheet. Regards, Tony |
