Hi. My name is leroy and my screenname here is Zion Naobi, which are the first names of my son and daughter respectively.
I'm a 27 year old psychologist from the netherlands, and I took up magic as a hobby long ago, but only recently have I started making a serious effort. Besides magic, I also paint and play poker. Seeing Brad Christian perform a pass a couple years back -when elusionist still had a crappy site and hardly anything newer than Ninja 2- introduced me to the fact that sleight of hand went way beyond what I thought, and got me fascinated. Recently I've been devoting my attention almost purely to the theory of magic and the very related presentation. Contrary to my previous ideas I now believe that presentation and composition of an act (like in painting) is superior to any other aspect of magic, and therefore my attention now shifts there. I practice magic as a hobby, and I'm not very good. But that doesn't prevent me from taking the message that I want to bring across very seriously. Mainly, because if I don't, my magic just doesn't have the effect I want it to have. Recent influences on my magic have been Darwin Ortiz, Eugene Berger and in a large way Derren Brown (regardless of how cliche that is, I like the way he thinks about magic). The latter doesn't mean that I now try to emulate his style by walking around mind reading in a black trenchcoat and goatee (however appealing that may be; rowr). Rather, it means that I took away from Derren's material (and Ortiz, and Berger) that magic should start with the result. That is, it starts by determining, what effect you want to have on an audience; what you want to leave them with. And only after that should magic be about specific effects and patter. Because the first will for a large part dictate the latter. A bit of a long rant -and of course it's entirely my personal opinion- but it elucidates my stance in magic and my place on this forum. See you on the boards.
Best,
Leroy |

Hi Zion. Welcome to the Café! I'm a newcomer and found your intro fascinating (especially the part about starting with the result). Any suggestions on reading more about that?
Best, -Ananda

I got Derren Brown's Absolute Magic in the mail today, and from what I've read it's a good resource on that topic. I was first introduced to the concept through his pure magic book, but this is more elaborate and goes a lot deeper. Darwin Ortiz' Strong Magic (which I have not yet had the pleasure of owning) covers a lot of the ground Derren talks about. Derren just worded it in a way that appealed to me and struck a chord.
Good luck man. I think it's the single most important factor of practicing magic.
