When I first saw this effect, I thought it was outrageously pricey for what it was. After some research and thought, I figured out the method.
I think it's a great effect and beautifully made. My initial reaction re: the cost I think was legitimate but short-sighted. As a woodworker of many years, I can appreciate the quality of construction and the time it would take to make it. How much is one's time worth? Maybe it's not so outrageous after all. I guess the purpose of this post is to to ask all of us to appreciate fine craftmanship when we see it. There is so much junk out there that the good stuff should earn our consideration. No, I don't work for Dean and I will probably make my own. Don |

Do you think it`s easy to construct one? I was looking for one but I thought it`s quiet pricey. I will be interested if you could make one for me!

Hey, I could send you mine so you could deconstruct it, then make a whole bunch and sell them here, that way I could get some of the money I paid for it back and the rest of you can get one cheaper, we could call it the Don Dells Box. what a great idea, why did'nt someone think of this a long time ago?
nothing suprizes me anymore!

If you want the linking rope effects (which came from Paul Curry and Elizabeth Warlock - see Stewart James Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks), they can be done using a dollar store plastic crate, as Jim Gerrish and I demonstrate in our article "Sefalaljia Revisited" on The Wizards' Journal #10 on my site. We combine those effects with the original Stewart James Sefalaljia effects and some brand new ones ("Bell, Book and Candle" by ahem! myself) for a 10 minute routine. Unlike either the Deans Box or the original Sefalaljia cabinet, our little plastic crate can be taken tablehopping or close up out on the street, as well as performed from a platform or stage.

I've seen one that idea is interesting, but where can you perform it? It's not practical fro most close-up gigs, and it's rather small for stage shows.
For those who own this, where do you perform it? |

Seems like a nice living room piece. parlor. close-up. any of that.

Though the craftsmanship on a Dean's Box looks very nice and of exceptional quality (and I haven't actually own or seen one in person), I don't believe Dean makes them himself. I already have a Sheishen-No Spirit Cabinet from Viking/CW and can't see getting a Dean's Box at this point.
BTW, two top woodworkers that come to mind for their great skills are Mel Babcock and Alan Warner. |

My point was to express appreciation for the fine craftmanship of this effect and to indicate that this is a large part of the value of the trick. I in no way expressed my interest is ripping off Mr. Dean, just indicated that I might build one for my own use.
Some of you need to lighten up. |

I have used Dean's Box close up and table hopping. It is not that big a deal to carry it around.

If everyone thought this way about the ideas of intellectual property and rights, we wouldn't have any good magic creators left around. What would it actually cost to make a "Lemon Game", the Doug Malloy item? Probably next to nothing, BUT, we spend the money due to the fact that it's completely self-contained, the routine is part of the sale. Same goes for "Dean's Box". The ideas have been around for a long time for the particular phases, but DEAN put 'em together with a killer-constructed, quality box, and that's where you should buy one. Even if it's QUIET pricey.

I built one to use in a Victorian themed performance and based it upon the old Davenport seance cabinet. I also incorporated a couple of the features of Stewart James' Sefalaljia Box in my version so that it is a enhanced version of the effect.

I realize that's a problem...there's no way I could get my hands through those holes in a Dean's Box...that's why I don't have one and don't use it. I'm sure that if you ask permission, you may well have it granted. Ask anyone who's requested that from Barry Mitchell about his products.

I don't mind lightening up but posts that are interpreted like this...
"I think I'll just make my own and save some money" and "Hey, make one for me too. PM me!! You rock!" are bad. Regardless of the how innocent the intention.

I've made some of my own props for 40 yrs. I do it because I like to build things and, very often, I can make things which look nicer than those I can buy. I see nothing wrong with this. The fact that I might save some $ in the process is immaterial as far as I can see. I have a great egg bag that my wife made for me. Have I caused the dealers to go broke? I don't think so.
Anyway, I can see how my post may have left room for misunderstanding. I'll try to be more clear in the future. |

Your innocent comment in your original post was snatched up in a couple of hours by someone trying to save money and avoid paying dean for a box.
so you can see how quickly things go south if there is not some sort of clarification. thanks for understanding.
