I have an ungimmicked straightjacket that I have used on stage but have never used in a busking situation. I know that some of you guys (and girls?) use it as it seems to be a great closer.
My question is, do you worry about someone grabbing you tip bucket, or taking advantage of you some other way, when you are first strapped in? Do you have someone "watch your back", and if so, a spectator or friend? Thank you in advance.
Magic is an art. I am merely a tour guide.

When Jim and I tag-team shows he does the straightjacket, and we are able to watch each other's backs. I never asked him if he uses it when he works solo.

Sometimes I do have a friend with me to watch my back for a few reasons,so I don't get ripped off and to make sure the person putting me in the straitjacket doesn't tie up the belts in the back the wrong way makingan escape difficult.
and yes it gets some fathats! johnny

Steve at http://www.magicpitch.com has found some busker videos that include the straitjacket escape. They are in the videos section of his forum.

If you are going to do the jacket, ALWAYS have someone there to watch your back and, especially, your hat & other props.
Otherwise, you run all sorts of risks, up to and including geting mugged while IN the jacket! Safety FIRST!! Lee Darrow, C.H.

Too many people doing the SJ over here so I swapped it for the Tom Horn belt with thirty feet of chain escape.
Gets interest fast (Belt is billed as a Death Row transportation restraint used in the transportation of prisoners from Death Row to their place of execution by lethal injection or electrocution)Also state that no one has ever escaped this restraint!! Two speckies up, chains anyway they like with up to eight padlocks put on anywhere they like. No fear of people making off with your cash as you can get out in less than 10 seconds. Ken PS The hat build is from the time the belt is put on,,,,plenty of time to build a good hat. A great street finale,,,must be mad parting with it here!!!! |

The straitjacket gets money on the street. <--notice the period. Done badly, the straitjacket still gets money on the street, albeit not as much.
I know one guy who stuffs his money down his pants as part of the act before the jacket goes on to keep the runners at bay. In the summer it is a hot, sweaty, mother. Even if it is gimmicked, if you are old, paunchy, and a smoker like myself getting out always looks difficult. I love the jacket but I stopped doing it on the street because of the heat. Yeah, you ain't kidding Michael! I used to say, "Now they got a kid out front that is in great shape and does this trick. It takes him 30 minutes.
I am a 43 year old man with the cardiovascular endurance of a retired, chain smoking, Pennsylvania coal miner. I am going to escape in under TWO minutes. Now, I will be honest with you, I will either escape in that time or have a stroke, either way it should be entertaining for you folks!" That thing could GTFM like nothing else. This season I almost retired my old straitjacket, it is getting very difficult to get out of in the summer with all the humidity and sweat, the thing literally sticks to my skin making it much more difficult.
The finale for most my shows this summer was...THE CUPS AND BALLS!!!!!! However each time I ended my street shows with the jacket it got the fattest hats. johnny

Kondini, just fyi and no offense intended in ANY way, in a recent mugging here in Chicago, ONE guy, 5'8" tall and only weighing in at about 165lb, caused the following injuries to a guy who was 6'2" tall and who weighed 215lb.:
1 broken leg, 2 broken arms at the elbow, 1 fractured collarbone, 1 concussion, 1 broken jaw, 3 broken fingers and a torn ear. And no, he didn't hit him with a car or use any wepons at all. He just went nuts and started wailing on the poor guy! 10 seconds is a LONG time in a street fight, especially when you can't do much. Don't believe me, the rest of you? Think about getting a good, solid kick to your nether regions - as many times as is possible in 10 seconds... ALWAYS have someone watch your back, your props and, most especially, your hat! The Sj is always a great street act. I do it as a closer and have never had any problems with people stealing my stuff. I know my audience pretty well when I am put in the jacket. So I don't think that anyone would grab my money. But then again, perhaps someday someone will run away with my hat.
Here's some photos a photographer took during the end of my show this summer. http://www.stigmylfalk.com/Utbrytarkung/index.htm Enjoy! /Ark

I did the Straight jacket (with chains for a bit) for years, yes normally other performers were there watching, but sometimes there wasn't,never worried about idiots though as you've normally got the crowd of a 100 or so on your side anyway,,
Didn't have to worry about the hat money as I only collected at the end holding the hat anyway and the rest of my cash was on me or hidden,, Straight jacket is an easy street show to do that's why there is a lot of them out there,, Nick |

Good points about collecting after the turn, but making sure your poke from the previous shows is safe is always a good idea, too.
Word to the wise - an idiot once tried to mug me when I was doing the thumbcuffs, in front af about 70 people... in front of a Police station. At lunch time. Pretty stupid perp... pretty good hat... wasted afternoon identifying him and dealing with the cops' paperwork chase. Lee Darrow, C.H.

I was once mugged by a man who was on crutches. He was wearing a camo outfit. I warned him, "You can hide, but you can't run!"
