Body Tricks is the easy answer, but I agree with the others. You'll be better off refusing.
Its seems harsh, but if you start acting like a performing monkey, they start treating you like such, asking for a different trick every few minutes. Once you run out of tricks, they will make you know that its wrong. Don't take the bait. And card tricks seem prepared for an impromptu environment. Unless they have them at hand, it makes you look nerdy if you have a pack on you at all times. We might be magicians, and yes I have a pack with me also, but I don't bring them out at request. It labels you if you always have cards at hand, and definitely separates you from your friends if you constantly perform tricks for them. Its becomes like showing off, with you showing them something you can do, and they can't. Eventually they will hate you for it. Leave the magic for the paying customers. Steve |

Bull! I perform for paying clients as well as all of my friends. I usually only perform for friends when asked and I usually act like I will if they insist. This takes away the trying to show off aspect of it. I don't get played like a monkey either. If you know how to control the situation like a good salesman, then it's not a problem. The big question is... Can you control your crowd? I almost always leave them impressed and not insulted. Only the inexperienced will have these problems. If you are newer to the art, keep plugging away. Sooner or later even if you have little talent, you will grow into a star. Practice and perform as much as you can. This is the only way you will be better than the average magician. BTW, there sure is a lot of negativity in this thread. Makes you wonder if they still enjoy the art or are they just in it for the money. Just a thought that crossed my mind. I suppose we all have our own points of view.

Its not about controlling an audience, they are your friends. You shouldnt be trying to control your own friends, or perform for them.
As friends, you should just enjoy each others company, and not be expected to entertain them constantly. A few tricks now and again, sure. But don't get into the habbit of it. ku7uk |

Did you read what I stated? I let them ask so it seems that I was "pressured" to do it. That way I don't come accross as the geek magician trying to show everybody effects. I cleverly control the situation. We do this in everyday life as well. It's called having good tact. I don't usually offer to do magic either. That would be uninvited, wouldn't it? I did that back in the day when I was lacking in entertainment and magic skills. It's all about your people skills and knowing how to read the crowd.
BTW, I do sometimes not perform when requested. It's rare, but usually when I'm not in the mood. I wouldn't perform at my best in this situation, so why bother looking like an average magician in that case? I'm not trying to bash you all, but it seems that there is some negativity in here that is ridiculous. |
