Okay, I've just gotten into cups and balls and I got the moves down pat in the routine I wish to use.
it's a 2 cup routine, you start one ahead, dissapear the two balls and they reapear under the cups then you make one ball vanish and reapear under the other cup (transposition) then you make one ball go from your pocket back under the cup 2 times the second time you really put the ball in the pocket for the final load, then a comedy bit where I say I'm gonna put the ball under the other cup and I visually put it there really fast. I know this is hard to follow but it's just so you get an idea of the routine it ends with 3 final loads (haven't decided what yet) now the thing I have a problem with is the patter, normally I perform much like bill Malone, quite energetic and poking fun at it the whole time. I'm really having problems coming up with some patter for this effect, Do I need to make it a story? then what's the reason for them reapearing and going to my pocket. or do I just try to make it filled with one liners and puns? what's your ideas on this one |

You can do it as a story, although that often seems forced.
You can do it simply as a demonstration of one of magic's oldest effects. You can do it as though you are teaching the audience how to do it, while you're really not. You can do it in a bumbling style as if the balls, quite on their own, are doing things that you don't wish them to. You can combine parts of all of the above. Good luck!

Just keep doin it over and over and over again...
The words will come. Especially once you get very comfortable with the routine. You will find ineteracting with your audience on the spot more rewarding than a structured script. Naturally, you want some sort of premise on the introduction of the effect, but that is all you need. Some of the best C&B routines I've ever seen have been done totally silent with facial expressions and body language as the person performing wasnt a great "talker". All I'm saying is "Come into your own" with he effect.
I am truly blessed to have a job where people are laughing all the time and everyone believes in magic....Come to think of it, I'm blessed to even have a job.

I do a cups and balls routine and tend to just carry a running commentary while asking the audience questions as we go along about what they think they saw.
I also add some osmall one liners but overa ll I just go along with the commentary. It can be very energetic too, but that depends on your style. hope this helps. Liam

Yeah roland's routine that's right I learned it from somebody else though someone who showed me the routine once but it had way more phases so I just made it smaller.

Ask yourself, Why am I doing this? If you can invent a reason beyond "Beacuse I can" you might have the start to anwser to your question. That is how came up with the patter for my one cup routine.

For an effect like the Cups and Balls, I belive that 9/10 a story is the wrong thing to do. The Cups and Balls is visual, the last thing you want to do is confuse it with some story about three chimps and a Bannana.

Too involved a story is too much, but keep in mind that in the very first published cups and balls routine, by Hocus Pocus Jr. in 1634, the magician gives the balls names, Meridin, Benedic and Presto John, which could be the basic of a very, very simple story.
Sometime a bit of story line seems more interesting than, I put the ball under here. Now it went over there.
