Hi,
There was a scene in the film "The Illusionist" where Eisenheim tosses an orange back and forth between his hands and at one point causes the orange to time-lag or slow down in mid toss. I actually don't know if this is more juggling or magic, or if it just a result of special effects CGI. Any thoughts? -J. |

I read a post somewhere on the Café by Johnathan Townstead that said the method to this is revealed in an upcoming issue of Gemini Magic Magazine.

I think it's been documented that Robert-Houdin performed this effect (as well as the orange tree and other effects featured in the film). Even though all of the effects can be accomplished through traditional methods, I believe they used CGI for everything in the film just to make them more "visually stunning."
I suppose this makes sense in some cases. The mechanical orange tree effect would have seemed quite magical to audiences of that era, but by today's standards, it would likely not pass muster. The summoming of apparitions is another example of this. It seemed that the intent was to portray how the effects would have been perceived by the audience of the day, as opposed to how they actually looked. I'm sure it actually looked much less impressive, but someone who was in that theater would have left with believing it looked every bit as impressive as the modern CGI recreation of the effect.

The "time-lag" orange was originally planed to be done with CGI but in the end they used a more traditional method that would be difficult yet entirely possible to duplicate in real life. For more info see the October 2006 issue of genii.
