To me, that box looks like a typical item used in Mexican "Day of the Dead" or "DÃa de los Muertos" celebrations. They are frequently found in stores called "botanicas" and in gift shops that cater to Mexican clientele in the weeks before Halloween.

This particular style is Indonesian. There are many, many carved Indonesian skull/skeleton items available on the market at a low retail price. If you can get with a wholesaler, the prices are downright cheap.
I really like the style, and as far as it has made it into the mainstream culture, it still stands out as "unique" when used as a prop for a spooky/bizarre routine. Chris |
