You've learned a few fun routines and would like to work on your performance. Where do you perform, and how do you best use your performance time to improve for the next performance?
I find myself in a situation where I am not ready for the big time yet, but would be greatly aided by some performance experience. I have performed for my family and for a couple of local cub scout groups. Whhat are my best next steps? Thanx, Mike

Practice at home, then just go do it! You need to know what you're doing, but once you got it down, just go out to a show. Even do a benefit show where you are going for free and really just getting the reactions to tricks.

The only way to get performing experience is to perform.
Period. There are many places that would be overjoyed to get a free magic show as entertainment: seniors' homes, hospitals, etc. Just be careful of schools and libraries, as you could be cutting out a paid performer. This issue has been discussed at length before in the Magic Café (don't remember where) but there's nothing wrong with doing it again for the benefit of newcomers. |

I've had the question on my mind as well, but how do I know if another performer usually works a particular venue? I haven't decided where I actually want to start, but the last thing I want to do is step on someone's toes. As a musician, I have toyed with the idea of just blowing a few minds during breaks. So I am not too worried there. But I like the option of taking it a step farther. Any advice is appreciated. ed

Just go and perform!! That sounds both scary and fun.
How long were your first shows? Did you script the entire show ahead of time, or just each routine? And thanks for the advice thus far.

Yea, you might be cutting out a paid performer at libraries and schools. So when going to one of those two locations request $3.00 for a show. That will make you a paid performer also.

Hello What,
Just put together a few tricks and try doing them at say a local diner while having a snack with a buddy or family member. I find myself performing at work a lot of the time. I am an aircraft inspector in Phila, Pa. and find myself carrying some of my things with me going through the terminal while I'm there. Some people get a kick out of it but some people ask what else I do for a living and you should see the looks I get with the answer. Just try to have fun and be yourself. It'll all work out for you.

One idea from Tamariz and Ascanio (I think):
Perform at a friend's house telling him to invite some friends. Then, tell some of his friends that you can perform in his houses and that they can (and should) invite some friends... and so on You will build some experience using this method (along with a big belly if you stay for dinner

How about joining a local magic club there you can perform and improve together all with the help and constructive criticism you need.

These are all great suggestions. I, too, perform when going out to dinner with friends.
If I am going over to a friend's house, especially for a small social occasion, I try to tell someone in charge that I will bring a short set of magic--just in case. Then I wait for them to fit the magic into their schedule. I have also performed for friends at their homes or restaurants for birthday parties--and these shows have been a little longer. I think I am ready now, though, to charge a little money for my shows. I have put a lot of time, thought and expense into them! alleycat

Hi What, I would have also suggested like Peter to volunteer to do a show at a Seniors home or maybe a Boy's and Girls club. It's a great way to get experience performing in front of a crowd and both sides gain from it. Best of luck to you!

I always think there is a bit of a catch 22 kind of situation when you start out performing.
If you do it for free other magicians will say you're taking the work of paid performers. If you charge less you're undercutting them. If you charge the same you're giving the old pro's a bad name by performing inferior shows at the same price. but........ the only way to become a good performer is to perform. I think just be honest. Charge less and explain you're starting out. Then put your price up as you improve. If any old pro's have a moan about any of the above ask them how they started out |

Hi George, Yes you're right about the catch-22. I know it's tough when people are trying to gain the experience and yet want to remain on good terms with other magicians. Approaching a group however, that is really struggling with funds and would probably never hire an entertainer may be the way. If that sounds a bit too optomisitic then perhaps other working pro's can do what I sometimes do to help those that want experience. If I am hired for a large show..civic event or hospital show (have to clarify that all entertainers have been hired at this point, so not taking jobs away from anyone) sometimes it's just myself other times there may be several of us..I have on occasion approached the organizer and explained there is a new magi that would like to gain experience working the crowd would it be all right if I bring them along? Just one word of caution however the pro would need to verify that the person is appropriate for the function as it will be a reflection on them. Just a thought anyway..can't always do this as not always possible and it has to be the right event.
