Hi All,
I've been trying to figure out Tobin's puzzle (on page 66) but finally cracked. I just tried to find the solution online and discovered ther is no solution: here Does anyone know if Tobin performed some sort of sleight of hand to convince people that his pencil never left the paper? jdg

I have seen puzzles like this where the paper was folded over, and part of the drawing was done on the back, but remains unseen in the final drawing. Perhaps he did something like this.

Hi Scott,
The puzzle is more of a 'Draw the following in one continuous line' variety...It says he would draw it quickly...

It is called the "bisected, circumscribed square" and the point is to make the entire figure without taking the pencil from the paper, or retracing any of the lines. The craze is raging virulently in Louisville at present, where it was started by a professor of mathematics, who, they say, dashes off the figure with such graceful swiftness that no one can catch the secret of it. 1882 I would love to know more of the history behind this...
