Thank you Kyle, I just saw the reply to my question and it was exactly what I was looking for. Now I can set up my promo packs and not worry. In a few months I am going to buy a digital recorder so make a 3 to 4 minute DVD of my act to send out also.
Thanks again Peter |

One more thing I learned in salesmanship. If you are selling your show on the phone. Give your pitch. Once you names your price. Be silent. The one who talks first looses. Or wins, how-ever you want to look at it. They win a show.
I have caller ID and I used to get calls from areas I didn't want to work a birthday party. Sometimes they would ask one question: how much? Well in sales they taught us never give the price first. But I disagree. Sometimes we don't listen to our customers. They are shopping price. I let them know immediately I am not the cheapest. I quote my fee, no I don't raise it for them. I just quote it. And I try to hang up the phone quicker than they do. Unless they ask what I do for that price. Now when someone calls and asks what I do, then I tell them about the wonderful show I can offer, and at the end, tell them the price. And wait for their reply. A few times I had people call and book me without ever asking price. After the deal was booked, I said, oh by the way the fee is ... and they always say, no problem. Again, if someone is shopping price, I give it to them, and if they say ok and hang up, I didn't waist my time. (Don't you hate it when you try to buy a big ticket item like a car, and they will not give you a price?) Sometimes we need to listen to the customer. ACE

Ace - I used the silent treatment technique to get a discount on my wedding...
Them: And that is $35 per head. Me: Oh...... Them: Well we could do it for $30. Me: hmmmm. them: But since your paying for room hire it will be $25. Me: Ok then...I guess. Later on I "talked" them out of the room hire fee too! The key is to overcome the awkardness of the situation. |

I find it funny that you guys employ these techniques, but complain when someone does it to you.

I mean guys constantly complain about bargain shoppers and people trying to talk them down on price, and then brag when they do it to others.
Don't you think that if the wedding hall people have a web site you are being talked about as the pain who called? The things that seem to be tolerated least in our customers, are bragged about here sometimes. It is really strange to watch. Nick, not you per se mind you.

Danny -
I was buying a pair of jeans at a big and tall store about a month ago, and the clerk also suggested that I might need a new belt. I agreed, and together, we picked one out. Although, it was really lower on my list of priorities. And I meant to purchase that later, on a future visit. I knew I was being sold an add-on, and I went along for the ride, because it was something I needed, and he wasn't being pushy or rude. As he was ringing through the sale, I commented to him, "Nice upsell", with a smile. I could tell he was a little blown away by the comment (probably because I identified it by "inside jargon"). But I meant it sincerely, and wanted to compliment him for doing a great job assisting me (selling to me). He saw a need, and suggested something. In the end, it helped both me and him. I was happy to be sold, in a professional, polite way, just as I do to others. - Donald P.S. I spent twice as much as I intended to, but in the end, I wasn't unhappy about that at all.

Danny - I don't mind price shoppers. I don't like RUDE price shoppers! They have the right to ask for a discount and I have the right to say no.

Nick, no sir this was not about you. Please do not think I was speaking of you.
I love sales pitches. I love to watch infomercials, I love carnie pitches, I have a closet full of carnie stuff I never use or believed I would simply because I like the pitch and feel the guy did a good job so should be rewarded. I tip better when a server tires to upsell me wine even though I don't drink it. BUT when guys here complain about bargain shoppers, and many do, then brag about how they get this and that for free, well like I said at that point on some chat board YOU are the pain in the but customer that everyone dreads.

I'm guilty! I'll admit, I complain about the bargain shoppers. I think I have a post somewhere about a lady said doctors don't charge as much as I do. That really got under my skin.
But I give an occasional discount if they are nice to me, or repeat customers, etc. The other day a phone salesman tried to sell me something. After his pitch, silence could have killed the air. He lost. He spoke first. He said something like "did you hear me?". It didn't matter what he said. I just said no. But it was something I didn't want or ask for. He is probably complaining about me right now on his web site, lol. Then when I got my car fixed, a belt, they told me I need a new hose. I walked out and had them show it to me and said, OK. I could have possibly replaced it for a fraction of the cost. But then tore up my performing hands. And I DID need it. So he helped both of us. And we were both happy. In my magic dealings, I wait for the call.(NO cold calling for me anymore, I sold insurance in my younger days, never again). They call me, I listen to the question, I give my pitch, and stay silent and give them a chance to answer. I figure if I interrupt their thinking by trying to keep the pressure and selling, I loose. I keep it concise, wait for the questions, answer them, and sometimes I close. But sometimes if I feel they are hesitant, I tell them to call me back when they are positive they want it. And let them know if they call back I will need a deposit. It is better than a cancellation. Today a lady called. She saw me before. All she needed was price and availibility. She was honest and told me she didn't realize it cost that much. She sounded like a very young 20 something mother. She said her dad was at the party also and was really amazed, he told her to call me. She said she would call him to see if he would pay for it. And she called back, he said yes! And I will probably go out of my way to do extra for these nice folks. I'm pretty sure he is a mechanic, because they saw me at a Mac Tool Christmas party. Might have to keep his name for a future trade in services. ACE
